i was in hf tools today (only place i shop :D) and saw a 115 piece titanium drill index for 60 bucks same size in carbide was twice the price are they really worth it??

I would never suggest using a carbide bit in a hand drill. The reason being, they are very brittle. Are they worth it, yes but they have a proper application.

if you where drilling stainless, otherwise no... now carbide burrs, one of gods great creations..

HF has it's place, but bits, nah.. I'm never proud shopping in that place..

i got no problem having hf tools..im very happy with price and the titanium bits they sell becasue i dont use them that often

they have there place... heck, my blaster is HF... I buy there abrasive discs too.. but screwdrivers or something? not a chance..

When buying drill bits Cobalt is what you want. They are reasonably priced and cut like hot butter. Just keep the speed down and use cutting oil and they'll last a long time. Oh, you also want 135* split point drill bits.

im a fing idiot i ment to put cobalt bits here is the kit i was talking about

I figured you meant Cobalt and not Carbide. At any rate yes that is a good set but it's doubtful that you need the number and letter drills also. You can pick up a 29 piece set cheaper that is just fractional sizes up to 1/2" by 1/64" increments.

Here is a set which should be all you need. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=36891

I just bought the set your talking about i think it was 119 or 129,

I just liked the idea of having a large selection and I liked the price, I plan to get a drill press for I went for it. As mentioned though the 30.00 dollar set would have done the job being I wont need most the sizes that come in the big pack.

quick answer... no
why cobalt? why not just use a HSS bit properly? cutting oil and a slow drill speed, you can drill anything...

I got the 119 peice cobalts as well.

I started a thread about bit speed and Snowman posted this great info.

depending on what material your cutting

Rpm=Cutting Speed x 4 / Diameter of the drill bit

Some general cutting speeds are

100 I.p.m. Steel
75 for S.s. Steel
150 for cast Iron
150 for Brass/ Bronze
400 for Aluminum

So for a 1 inch drill bit in steel

(100 x 4) / 1.0 so 400 Rpm if your using carbide you can double your rpm

This is what we use for figuring rpm on machine work but yes bigger bit slower speeds.

You can read the thread if you like.

Cobalt bits are amazing!! Just try them.

1/2'' through 3/8'' plate like nothin. I tried HSS bits with low speed and oil, takes forever.

I was told the titanium bits are just a coating and it wears out, cobalts are full through. Not sure if thats true or not though.

now im excited about getting to use em, you make me want to go drill a hole

odd, i used my HSS bits to drill a towplate made of 3/8" steel, no problems, then i keep my bits in good shape

You might have good results with HSS bits but until you've used a Cobalt bit you don't know what you're missing. I could never use another HSS bit again.

gotta love teh "drill slow" comments with HSS bit (high speed steel)

I don't dispute its truth though......

I never said anything about keeping the speed down with HSS, i was refering to cobalt bits.

I realize you didn't but several referred to it. I was just reading through some old threads, cause my metal drilling skills coudl always improve.
