Ha,..I'm having a tow hitch installed on my '87 K5 and I really think I'm putting the cart before the horse on this one. Meaning,...I don't even have a trailer to haul and I could be getting the axle seals worked on instead of getting a hitch put on!!! UGH!!! Owell,.. maybe I'm increasing the value of the rig and at least I'll have it in case,...I have to pull a trailer?!!! Not asking any questions here,...just airing out and shakin' my head at myself.

A receiver has far more uses than just towing, including an anchor point with the proper receiver. It can be used to hold a receiver mount winch, and plenty of other things.

They are pretty good at hanging down just enough to protect the fuel tank from pesky rock

Also good for catching on trail obstacles.

I'm not saying anything bad by that. There have been a few times where that hitch was a good thing. I never towed with it either.

Last summer I decided to put a class 3 receiver on my '82 K250...I had gotten 2 very nice tubular ones off 2 later model Dodge trucks that a friend was going to scrap--I figured the brackets could be swapped around to fit my frame,as most of them are somewhat "universal"--but they ended up not lining up with my trucks frame either way....bummmer---one was a nice Valley one rated at 10K GVW too..other one was slightly smaller tube and had a 7000 LB rating...................................................................................My older brother said he had a receiver off a late 80's GM truck,so I swapped him for my two tubular ones, which would fit his '2002 2500 HD 4x4...but when I got it home and went to install it,it too,was wider than my frame rails!..I think it came off an '88 or newer cab truck...not to be discouraged,I fabbed up some peices of channel iron to bolt to the truck frame holes ,that would let me bolt the reciver up.............looks kind of crude, but its very strong and probably more beefy than it would have been if it were a "direct fit".....................................................................................................After all that work,I havent towed a dam thing with it YET!....but if I hadn't put the receiver on it,I am pretty sure I would have bent the drivers side frame rail or cracked it,when I backed the truck into a utility pole going 15 mph in reverse while plowing last year--(trying to avoid getting buried in a snowbank I was sucked into while backing up!)--it hit it hard, then glanced off it, as the truck slid sideways,it bent my 6" channel iron rear bumper and the brackets in so far it now touches the drivers side stepside fender...and it mangled my license plate, the bracket for it,and the tailight was smashed to hell--(fender now has a lovely imprint of the pole in it 4" deep!:doah:)......but if not for the receiver hitch and the extra steel I bolted to the frame rails,I'm betting the truck would have been totaled,it saved it from folding up.....................................................................................................I may never tow with it,but I can always use it for a winch mount, recovery hook point, and I've been thinking about making my truck bed crane fit into the receiver so it can be used and taken off easily when needed...............its nice to have a trailer hitch "just in case" you need it....I haven't wired up any trailer wiring yet,but I did snag a "T" splice thing you plug into the stock harness at the flea market new in the box for 5 bucks if I need trailer lights...

Putting the cart before the horse, would be:

Buying ALL the components to build a BEEFY D60.... Before buying a D60.
Then, deciding to stay with yer built 10b.... :doah:

That's like buying a souped up cart.
Then, keeping your Goat. :haha:

Did that make you feel better? :dunno:

Ahh yes,...the new hitch makes the back end look alot more complete,..but,...now i have a rolling thud sound coming from down under,..."wt",...what next?!!! And actually I feel more comfortable with a hitch especially for that added protection of my gas tank...

Don't feel bad, I installed a trailer brake controller on my Yukon, yet I don't have a trailer. But it sure is nice when a friend or someone needs something hauled and I can say "I'll do it!" knowing that I can:D. That and the hitch does a nice job of keeping my bumper straight:waytogo:
