what does every one use to run them?

i usuly use mortec

but no luck help a guy out.
this is a rare moter, and i dont expect it to be easy, i expect most not to have hurd of it, and i need to see if i can find rings and gaskit sets for it.

Well what is it ? Is it a 348-409 ? what casting number ? I would love to waste away days at work next week searching :D

yeah why dont you give us stamping and casting codes off it

we would like to see front stampings, and rear castings and cast date too

i always use mortec, nastyz28.com,. etc.,

good luck

ok if you guys can run it cool

if some one can find it a gaskit set and rings even better.

it is a 287
14010289

we think these got made only for the checkered cabs back in the day.
and a few got put into other cars we hurd lemans, this moter is strong runlike a clock, with 125 psi in each cyl, and real clean inside to gunge to nothing.

it will be the new econo moter for my buddys jimmy

i dont know sude its a sbc, my buddy thinks it was from the 80s.

it was no amc car, it was in a lemans that got smacked up and it had low miles so some one put in in a chevy van, and my buddy got it off him.

pontiac lemans??

If its definately a small block chevy motor, its probably a 267 V8,they put them in malibu's,impala's and pontiac lemans and chevy monza's from 78-82...If its a pontiac motor it could be a 265 V8,it will look just like a pontiac 301-400 motor externally..
Do you have the code #s??--if so,post them and I'll see if any of my books list them...

Well , was it a good read , you are one number off for a 267

267 is 14010280 , 79-82 model years , 2 bolt mains

yeah i knew you guys wouldent belive me so i took pics

here, it very clearly says 287, it moter is supper clean, and nice, 125 psi in all the clys and clean out side like it never saw winter.

up here moter are not pritty

I still want to thinkits a 267 . No offense , maybe clean the casting number off some more . The one number , if it is 287 , could of been a mistake or something at the factory . But the end of the dirty number looks like a 0 and not a 9 :dunno:

the glare in the pic does mess it up a bit, i should have checked it then, but there is no mistake it is a 287.

my buddy said he found (not sure where) that it was put in the checkerd cabs the new nork ones you know.

and also he had found another one in the paper and that was from a le mans too.

since it runs like a top, he doent want to pull the heads yet, untill he knows he can get gaskit and ring sets.

That "287" number alone makes you think it's a 287? GM used 3 digit codes all over engine blocks, I wouldn't expect that to be a 287...by that time, they would have been using liters as an indicator of size anyway. That 287 is going to be a mold ID or something equally mundane.

I have a feeling thats nothing more than some small bore SBC (262, 265, 305, etc) that just doesn't use a common (or one that anyone cares about) casting number and thats why no record online.

As someone else asked for, whats the suffix code on that small pad? If it's blank, it could also be a factory replacement.

If it is a lemans motor I'll bet money that the Lemans didn't have anything but standard GM engine fare that year. GM didn't waste time certifying seperate engines for emissions if they didn't have to. There were no "oh we have this lying around, lets drop it in" at that point in history.

The less options they had in the drivetrain, the less EPA certification hassles, and in the cars, GM certainly didn't offer any more engine options than they had to. Way too much speculation, at this point origin is heresay and not going to be proven unless the suffix code checks out.

its not mine so i cant check the suffix code ans dident get it on the weekend.

ill call and ask him some time soon/.
