I have a friend that might be able to get me a smokin deal on a Caterpiller 3208. I have done a little research and found 3-4 references to people putting these in 1 ton crew cabs.
Anyone here know of someone that has done it? Pics? Anything?

This would be for my 1 ton crew.

I dont know anyone personally who has. I have heard of it being done. It would be a cool swap but they are so big and heavy in my opinion. Im fairly certain you would have frame and front axle problems.

My understanding (and someone can correct me on the math here) is that my 454 is about 1200lbs and the cat is around 1500lbs.

the cat probably weighs 1500..

your # for the gasser is way high, a BB weighs about 650lbs...

Thanks.

So at a minimum we would probably have to to a little boxing of the frame, adjust spring rates and HD spring mounting hardware.

Pic of one in a cool old Ford.

keeping in mind it is a disposable motor...

I have read that a lot but I have also seen many "remanufactured" ones.

My understanding is that it needs to be machined like any gas motor (454 for example) as opposed to just being able to swap cyl liners like some other diesels.

True, the liners don't come out, but for a recreational user that's not a big issue. You're not intending to put 200k miles/yr on it are you?

This is one of those deals that I would only do if one kinda fell off a truck and landed in my garage.

I put almost 200 miles on the truck last year so I think it would last me a while. :wink1:

Problem is with the turbo - it has to sit in the back middle of the V and it makes it hard to route the exhaust so close to the firewall/transmission. (so I hear) - kelly.

a friend of mine put one in a 86 ford 1ton years ago, boxed the frame, reinforced the cross-member,lotta work ,no prob with the turbo but a heavy motor. diesels in pickups today are much better than the days of the ol'cat swaps, save your time and cash and look elsewhere. sorry no pics
