So the catalytic converter is rattling and stealing all the power from my s10 blazer, needs to be replaced along with an o2 sensor i think..

I read online about some people getting charged over 1000 to replace this, wtf?

You can buy them online for 60$ at the cheapest and 150 for a magnaflow..

I dont see how a couple hours of labor will rack up a bill like that, perhaps its the model of the car that causes the high price?

Im scared to get a quote now!

I wish i knew how to weld...

cats are expensive, especially oem ones which is most likely what a garage would use if you brought it to them (stock cat on my 99 silverado is 1500 bucks for just the part). Those prices you are quoting are most likely universal ones, which will work, but do not last as long as the originals.

As for replacing it, maybe someone in your area will chime in that knows how to weld

Depending on the year s10, a factory cat and pre-cat come on the Y pipe and is the only way to replace it without cutting. Dealer only piece. About $680 IIRC for the piece and whatever someone charges for labor.

An exhaust shop shouldn't be anywhere close to that price (and this is coming from a Kamifornian who pays $$$ for his CARB approved sh*t) You can do it yourself even cheaper and not have to weld. Buy the right cat, buy a pipe spreader, 2 exhaust clamps, and away you go. You might not even need the spreader.

Gotta look at it underneath to see if this will work for you.

it is a 2004, doing it my self would be great thats for sure.. i really dont have more than 500 to spend in all reality that would max me out, but if its going to be more and i cant do it my self id have to save.

Just sucks because i have 0 cars now, not looking forward to taking a 92 min ride to work everyday.

I Had a member mail me a used one for the Burb. The smog guy asked if it was new, I said yes. He didn't even look. I could send you one!

The OE Cat. Install, on my 2004 (V8) Tundra..... Was $2,200, out the door.
Yea....

$2,200, for a cat, an O2 sensor, and install.

Thank gawd for theft insurance.
Oh, yea... Did I mention THEFT INSURANCE is good, for if people steal things off yer truck.
Happens all the time.

I don't remember where it came from, but my friend bought a complete exhaust for his 99 s10 for around 250 with everything and we replaced the whole thing in a couple hours. It was a ghetto performance type and his truck forever sounded like a Honda but for 250$ he couldn't complain. It was all clamps no welding and had a universal style cat and muffler. This was about 8 years ago so prices may be higher on steel and parts and whatever kit it was may no longer exist. Anyways, look around a bit more you may find a cheap solution.

lots of people around here were doing cheep price cats and now there not cause 6-8 months later there junk .

so buyer beware.

I was pointed to a local exhaust shop near where i live, i called the guy he said he would weld on a universal for 300 out the door, thats with labor and all. not to bad i guess. i was going to spend 300 at least for a direct fit and do it my self.

Judging from some of the quotes iv seen on the internet it seems like a legit deal.

Heres to hoping there isnt a peice of honey comb lodged in the muffler.

better also check the muffler.

last one I did with loose cat had gotten down the line and plugged up the muffler a bit also . wound up doing cat back for the guy .
