Cause and effect: engine oiling?

Cause:
Say you had a 454 with a smaller capacity car oil pan... and you swapped a larger capacity truck oil pan onto it without changing the oil pick up tube... and then you ran the motor at over 6 grand for a few passes through a mud pit.


Effect?: What do you think?

cam or main bearing failure as pickup became air bound and could not supply oil pump with oil..... (just a hunch though)

If the extra capacity is gained purely by the depth of the pan then the only thing you've gained over the small pan is a bit more cooling. If the gain is in width then you will have more oil to compensate for the oil loading up on top of the heads.

Well, 6 grand is a guess. The factory tach pegs at 5 grand, and it was well past there.

I'm just toying with the possible causes. I wonder if I could have been better off leaving it with the small oil pan.

its always good to have dust flying around you when you rebuild your bottom end...

That is some hardcore shiat... i would have been running people off if they were driving by and kickin up dust. Probably would have done it in the garage tho.

If you didn't change the dipstick, I wouldn't think it would be a big deal...you'd just add oil until the dipstick read "full", no? That'd be the same place in relation to the pickup no matter how deep the pan was.

and you probably wouldnt have made it to compete the next day. some of us are more hardcore than others. i've changed small block Chevys using one of those lift cranes that mounts to the bed of the truck between heats at a demolition derby before. you wanna play, you gotta pay.
