I've had my Midland 5001z mounted to the front of my center console in my Suburban for about 2 years now.

Sadly, it seems to have died. It turns on, but there is no output to the speaker at all. Last time I "used" it (it's actually on anytime the truck is on) was a few months ago, and I kind of wondered why the reception was noisy. Well, now it does nothing. Opened it up, and didn't see anything obviously wrong with it.

You know, I needed a smaller unit anyway; I've also got a 2-meter radio to install, but have been indecisive on where to mount it. So now I'm looking at a compact CB, something like a Cobra 19 Ultra. The smaller size should be more similar to the Kenwood 2-meter unit I have.

So on to my question. Has anyone mounted either a small CB or a slim HAM radio in a Suburban overhead console, and have it look decent when it was all mounted up? I would like to have the CB up there, and the HAM on the front of the console between the seats. I think...

I'll miss the Midland, it was a good radio while it worked. Looked nice too, but sure would not fit in the overhead console.

I have a Midland just like that if you're interested. I'm looking at getting a Cobra 29LTD myself so if you'd like, I could sell it to ya.

Just name a price and it's yours.

Woah thanks!

I found a 1001z locally for cheap and now working on installing that in the overhead console.

Before I talk to you about another 5001z... I'm going to contact Midland and see if they'll fix it under warranty. I think there's a 3 year warranty? If so, this was only purchased 2 years ago...

Thanks again!

So Midland says to send my dead unit back to them.

In the meantime, I started pulling apart my overhead console. The black trim snapped at the end of the first compartment (where you will never see the snap line), making it easier to get that area prepped for the radio. The 1001z easily fits there, the 5001z might have even fit too.

So I just need to do some cutting, get an antenna extension cable, run some power cable, and I'll have the CB ready to go.

Next is to try and get the 2m rig mounted where the 5001z is in that first pic... and it came (used) with no mounting brackets. Also need to figure out what I'm going to do for an antenna on that unit; the one I have now is attached with a mag mount, and even though it's like a 20 pound mag, trees still rip it right off the roof...
