The 3+3 I just bought has an existing mount on the roof for either a CB or Ham radio. Does anyone know what type of mount it is, and if it will work for a cb antenna. The second mount location appears to be a r ounf plug to fill the hole previously made. Since there is already a mount/holes in the roof I would like to install a cb antenna in the same location. Does anyone know the best type of mount/antenna for the given situation? Also does anyone know how the existing mount is actually attached to the roof before I start tearing into it?

Any help would be great.

Looks like an Antenna Specialists base loaded coil mount, or a Motorola POS 1/4 wave mount for VHF.

I'd have to see a clearer picture to be sure. The center button doesn't look right.

Be warned though, if its on a fiberglass top, then it will have to be an antenna made with a built in ground plane.
Standard 1/4 wave won't work.

Not sure where you would get one these days. They used to sell them for fiberglass boats and Corvettes, but I have not seen one in a while.

Back when I did that sort of stuff a lot, I often got away with mounting a metal plate under the mount and making sure the braid was hooked to it. Didn't have to be too thick, just enough surface area.

Once, in a pinch, I got away with a sheet of aluminum foil. It gave it enough ground plane so that we could call into shore and get someone to bring us a jump. I had already rigged up a sail of sorts, and we weren't but about 4 miles offshore.

I figured we would drift in close enough by dark to raise someone on his screwed up antenna system, but then I found out we were out of Cokes.
Still had plenty of water, and other supplies, but no way was I going to sit there for about 5 hours with no Cokes.

So, I took the foil from some sandwiches and made a ground plane.

Nice, cant do without the Cokes, well Mt. Dew for me! Its mounted on the roof of my crew cab, so its metal all around. The smooth button looks to be just a hole cover.

Due you know what kind of mount I can get to replace this one , it appears to be broken, for my CB?

Don't know why I assumed it was a fiberglass top. The button I was talking about is the center part of the mount. It does not look like the mount I was thinking of.

If it is an AS mount, I doubt you will find an antenna to fit it. They made darn good antennas, but got bought out, and have pretty much disappeared.

NOT good to have a base loaded antenna on a roof anyway, unless its for highway only.

See if it looks like this mount.

Scroll down to the bottom.

I'll have to check around for antennas today. Its been years since I had to do any CB work.

I think K40 is still in business. AS was better, but they did not make it.

What kind of driving will the truck see? If there are a lot of limbs, or low places it makes a difference.

Just finished installing a new radio, cabling, mount, etc in my truck. I went with a L bracket mount on the driver's side quarter panel just in front and below my driver's side mirror. I was a little worried about having some clearance over the top of the truck. Consider that the reason it's broken off might have been for the same reason.

The other thing I was thinking, is if it is the roof of the cab, how much room is there between the steel and the headboard (or whatever the crap that thing's called)? I haven't had mine off in a while now. But judging from the thickness of the mount on the inside that's securing it to the roof, and the connector on the antenna cable (even if it's a 90deg connector) it's going to be sticking out a lot. Side made a cleaner install IMHO.

Looks like it to me too! Motorola has rubber plugs if you want to remove it. My Blazer has the hole right above the dome light and they ran coax under the rubber seal and down to floor.

Was this a fire or similar vehicle?

Is the "Antenna Specialists" mount the same as an NMO? I have two of those on my ex-forest service blazer and had a hell of a time identifying them until a member here pointed me in the right direction. If it is NMO you shouldn't have any problem finding a cb antenna for it - 1/4 wave base loaded whips are all over eBay for about 40 bucks.

It was originally a state truck, not sure what branch, I believe cal trans by the original color. The base is not the antenna specialists one shown on the site, its slightly different.

The truck is mainly a tow rig, but there are occasionally low branches around the property.

Ok definitely an NMO Mount after doing some web surfing. I apprechiate everyones help. What is the best antenna for this type of mount?
