hey guys...I have a el-cheapo handheld CB (cobra I think) that has always been a little flakey with respect to its ability to send/receive. It does have an external ant. port on it....would adding a nice big whip (102"?) on the rear bump help or will I have to get a "real" CB? I got my hand-held for free...so it'd be cool if I could use it. =p

I agree . It will make a big difference in the reception. and might help a little on the transmit . Most hand held units only put out 2 watts.

I had a cobra handheld that was flakey too. Put the whip on helped a bit, but not as much as getting a "real" cb. Even if it is a cheapo "real" one.

Why go around when you can go over?

It sounds like it's time for you to get a real CB, Put the hand held in the glove box.
As for the whip ant I don't like them mostly cuz when your on the trail the damn thing hits everything and if there is anyone within reach it gets them to. Which is why all the clubs I 4 wheel with have outlawed them.
Is a whip ant. a good one yes it is, but you can do just as well with a fiberglass ant.

If you want a cheap CB, try pawn shops. Have bought about 8 from various pawn shops over the years. Most shops will exchange it if it doesn't work. I never pay more then $30 and have always had good luck with them. Most of the time, they're just sold to raise money by some "down and outer" who's in a bind.
