cb radio

im looking for a new cb radio which one do you recomend getting

Galaxy DX979 is popular among HAMs. I intend to get one along with a 2m HAM radio once I have a running vehicle.

I'm no expert on CBs, but the performance depends way more on the antenna selection and installation than it does on the radio. Yes, good radios have more sensitivity and better noise rejection for receiving, but they all have just 4W for transmitting. Some features I think are worth a couple more bucks than the bare bones units have are IF gain (for when you're close to somebody on the trail) and scan.

In general that is quite true, but there are a few features worth having, particularly SSB, which is on the Galaxy unit I recommended. In addition, if you are good with a soldering iron, there are plans on the Internet for replacing a couple components on the board with higher quality components, reducing noise and extending the range again.

A typical CB will send and receive over a couple miles. One that is top notch, with a quality antenna will send and receive 12-15 miles without violating any FCC rules.

If you want longer ranges, you'll need a HAM license and a HAM radio.
