I've been seeing alot of posts/replys about carbs lately, so thought I'd start a thread. Okay, here's the deal. Working on getting a 454. Will be close to stock. Will mostly be doing low to mid RPM driving (Trails and streets, with some interstate) So carb experts, what CFM would you recomend ????
 
On my stock 454 when it was in the 1 ton dually, I ran a 625 Edelbrock, but that never saw over 4,000 rpm. A 454 running 6,000 rpm will need a 750. The choices between are limited. Unless you gonna run a Holley race carb. But the suck off road. You could use a holley truck avenger, rated at 770 cfm. 770 CFM Avenger
It's vacuum secondaries, so you can adjust how quick they open.

[/ QUOTE ] Honestly, I'm not sure. Also working on getting a sm465/NP-205 combo, and a Dana 60. Not sure on gearing yet. I've got 36's in the shed, but will be stepping up to something larger in the future. I want to be able too run out on the interstate if need be, but I bought the truck with the intention of exploring old trails up in the Black Hills for old mineing towns (Ghost towns) and for camping.
 
The smaller a carb you can run, the better the throttle responce will be. If your not going to rev the engine over 4500, you could use the 670cfm avenger. What 454 are you running? what cyl heads? If your goona use small "peanut" port heads, then the 670 would be good. Those heads are small and don't flow much over 4,000 rpm anyways. You can get a ton of low/mid rpm torque from them.
 
I would use a 600 on a truck if you insist on not using a Quadrajet. When I worked on boats, I was shocked to see that the ones that didn't have Q-jets on them had 600 cfm Holleys.

I personally would use a Q-jet.
 
damn.. I had my holly truck avenger on my 454 and thought it was a dog once it hit 4000 + rpm /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

then again I never did get it jetted right sooo I dunno /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Haven't aquired the 454 yet. Donor truck I'm working on getting is a 81 K30.
 
Get a 800 cfm quadrajet off a BOP 455 or BBC. Awsome carbs... I try to pick them up when ever I find em.

I'm good Thunder... hope you can say the same. Yeah I disregarded quads for a lot of years, but now actually have as many quads in my garage stash as Holleys... although trying to get some of those gone as I'm more of a FI guy these days.
