Can you swap the tailshaft housing and output shaft on a 2wd th400 to a 4wd housing and output shaft to mate it to a transfercase?

Thanks
Lucas

From what i understand if it was a fixed yoke TH400 from a truck or Vette all you need to do is remove the tail housing and you now have a 4x4 TH400. :thumb:

that's what it looked like I could do but I didn't know for sure. I have one from a 69 3/4 truck so I think I'll keep it for a th400-203-205 set up and get rid of my 700r4-klune v-208.

Yup, thats what I did. Fixed yoke from an 84 3/4 ton. Took off tail housing, attached the t case adapter and slid the 205 on. Fixed yoke TH400's had a longer output shaft.

That's fine if you want a TH400/NP205. If you want to run a NP203 with the factory adpater you need a shorter trans mainshaft.

yep!

and i didnt know that for the 205 case

thats pretty interesting that 2wd and 4x4 output shaft for 400 is same across the board

thats very interesting!

hum

too bad th350 arent like that eh ?

most 205s take that shaft but dont forget the short and long input on 205s for 400. i have the long one and the shaft length is different than the short one.

stupid question...

I have a TH400 out of a 74 Monte Carlo that had a 454--could it be used in a 4x4 by removing the tail housing and making a spacer block to take up the extra lentgh of the tailshaft??(I realize the transfer case would have to be moved back some to accomadate the longer overall length, and the driveshafts would need to be altered)--or would a divorced T-case be easier in the long run?? --just wondering if its worth keeping as a spare for my 82 K20--I suppose I could have the tailshaft from my existing tranny installed in it-maybe that would be easier.. I'm hoping I never have any tranny problems(works great at the moment)--but its had a good beating plowing this winter, and will likely get many more to come..

for all 203 setups its the 3/4" stick out shaft and or short shaft. the stubby one. then the dubbler kit to mate all other parts.
