Would it be worth it to change a NP208 for a NP241 in a 87 K5?

I'm going to replace the transfer case I have in my truck. I'd like to be able to get a second transfer case to rebuild out of the truck, and then just switch the two. I figure that way I have the least amount of downtime on the truck.

I was wondering if I should spend the time to find a mechanical speedo NP241? Or could I switch the mechanical speedo out of 208 with the electrical speedo out of a 241?

Mike

not sure about the speedo being interchangeable but the 242 has a better low range 2.72:1 so yeah I'd say its worth it if your set on aquiring a different T-case

I did exactly what you are talking about and it was fairly easy. I would recomend going with an electric speedometer if you have the money. They are very easy to intall and make it easy when you change gearing/tire size to have the correct speedometer reading. I started out with a mechincal speedometer 241 and converted it to an electric one. I wish I had just gone electric from the beginning and saved time and money.

How easy is it to wire up an electric speedometer? Is it as easy as just running a couple of cables?

Thanks for the info,
Mike

while your rebuilding the 241, You might want to get rid of the slip yoke with a slip yoke eliminator kit from JB conversions

How much should a used 241 + Speedo go for? $150 to $200 normal?

Anything else I should do to it? I'm going to replace all the seals, and maybe have it hard anodized just for grins.

I definitly wouldn't pay more than $200 for an aluminum t-case. You may want to replace the chain if it looks bad. I dont know how much a chain costs, but if its cheap enough I would replace it while its out

If you decide you want to go cable drive, I have a complete setup for an NP241 sitting here, PM me if you are interested

It is pretty easy to wire an electric speedo. It needs a power wire, a ground, a wire for the back light and i think two signal wires but it might just be one.

I have never paid more then $75 for a 208/241 and that was when I needed it quickly. usually I find them for $50.
