change gearing possible for a noob?

Around here, its $1200ish or so. They don't want to use gears you bring them or install kits. You bring the axle and go away. They'll call you when its done. Of course the price includes the gears and master install.

EDIT: No, I don't pay it. I do it or my uncle does it for me.

I picked up a HF press and bearing removal kit and got my magnetic dial indicator from summit. I had to get some longer bolts for the bearing puller from lowes. But other wise it worked pretty good. I did my Dana 44 first a couple months ago, then a few months later I helped PBlaze do his front an rear 10 bolts. If you take your time and are patient. It's not bad and with Dana's if you make a set of set up bearings it helps alot.

You talking about this bearing removal kit? OUCH!:eek1: 400 bones....but cheaper than paying a shop.

How's that habor freight presss working for you? Was a 12 ton enough or did you go with a 20 ton?

The 12ton works great for gears and most other things I think I'm going to weld it up though because it's not the sturdiest thing out there. Lol no I just typed it stupid I have the crappy $40 bearing/gear puller from HF. Im a work on a budget and make the best of it kinda guy

So am I....I just don't know if I can get by with that style puller. I regeared my truck to 4.88 for competition truck pulling 2 years ago and they only had one pass down the track on them. Now I'm putting my truck back on the street after a complete engine/transmission rebuild and my funds are spent. Have a buddy who know's how to do R&P he & his boss hooked me up the first time for a lil cash and some sticker placement, but my buddy doesn't work there anymore.:doah:

Oh well I've wanted to learn how to do this for a long time....could be a money maker.:woot:

When you change only the gears and not the carrier, the old shims/settings are usually pretty close. Gears are machined within real good tolerances. Most of the adjustment is really based on your housing, secondly the carrier and finally the gears themselves. So the time required increases when you swap the carrier out.

well, I watched that video that nsxxtreme mentioned and now that I've seen it done, it doesn't look too bad at all. I think I'm going to go for it.

so, from what I understand, in the back I can just change the ring and pinion (going 3.73 to 4.56 on a 12 bolt) and keep everything else. should I change anything in my gov-lok?

in the front I have to change the carrier unless I use a gear spacer? I'd really like to avoid having to buy a new carrier, along with all the setup that would entail.

trying to come up with a parts list I need to buy in order to pull this off.

Dana 44 front:
ring and pinion:
"thick" gear set for dana 44 4.56 ratio $163.87
minor install kit $76.49

12 bolt rear
ring and pinion:
Yukon ring and pinion for GM 12 bolt truck 4.56 ratio $296.20
minor install kit $82.65

12 ton HF press $129.99

HF bearing separator $29.99

summit racing dial indicator $29.95

craftsman beam style torque wrench(from summit) $25.19

grand total: $834.33 (not counting shipping)

that's not a great savings over the $1000 I was quoted from the shop. of course I do end up with about $200 worth of tools out of the deal...

...And you can do it more than once.

Remember set a mans gears & he's good for a rig, teach a man to set gears & he's good for a lifetime.

true words man. :thumb:

most of the high dollar items are from randy's. going to do a bit of shopping around and see if I can't beat that price.

also, the install kits I have listed are assuming I'm going to be reusing my bearings. is that likely, or a dumb idea?

Why not replace them when your in there:dunno: It'd be better to replace them than F up your gears when one goes bad:waytogo:

Good luck reusing your old bearings. Setting those up will be a pita seriously not worth the $100 some odd dollars you would save. Buy a new bearing kit. You will want to save the old bearings and grind the inside so they slip on and off the pinion easily like shown in the video.

I think this is where I ended up getting my gears from
http://completeoffroad.com/ they seemed to be the cheapest.
I dont remember paying that much for the press and bearing seperator. I think it was less. Harbor frieght ALWAYS has sales. You will want a Master install kit for the bearings. Your gonna want the shims and all the bearings.

You will need to double check what you have. Usually you only need to change the carrier if you go above 4.56 on some axles. They sell "thick" gears for others.

thanks for the replies and advice man. yeah, since I wrote that I found the "thick" type ring gears and it appears I'll be able to go that route.

all I could find in searching randy's was minor install kits. I'll look for the master install kits and plan on using those.

I'm pretty sure I can get the tools cheaper too, but that was what was listed on the hf and summit websites. for what it's worth, hf has a dial indicator that attaches to a channel lock rather than magnetic. I might go that route...:dunno:

This is the one I got http://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1782

I dont know what the "channel lock version" looks like but the magentic one has small adjustments screws so when you get things kinda lined up you can then fine tune with the screws. Its important to get that set right in order to measure the backlash properly.

I went with 5.13's my rear 14 bolt was a piece of cake. The front 10 bolt was a pita because the pinion is so damn small. Was hard to get a decent pattern.

Bringing up an ancient thread but does anyone know where I can pick up a decently priced in'lb beam torque wrench? I have seen them for like around $150 bucks not really looking to spend that but I will if I have to.
