so i got a smoking deal on a warn m12000 but in the fine print it's a 24v(totally my fault). so should i buy a replacement 12v motor and different control pack too or would i be better off reselling it and buying the 12v version? i can find a motor for it for under 150 so if the control pack isn't too expensive that would be the cheaper way... but would the warranty be covered then? and if i do plan on selling it where would be the best place to sell it OTHER than Egay.

I'm sure there's a way to add another battery in your rig to allow you to use it. I mean 24 volts for the winch only. If not then you have to weigh the profit of sale to the cost of swapping motors. Why would the control pack need to be changed? They are just continous duty solenoids and i'm pretty sure they don't care what voltage goes to them (i could be wrong).

The solenoid coils are rated for a specific voltage. You're right that the *contacts* don't care what goes through them (though at the higher voltage the motor would of course draw proportionately less amperage so they may be rated for less than the 12V winch would require) but the coils take 24V to close. [Actually they prolly close around 20 and won't open again until the voltage drops below 18, but I digress.]

To the OP, the motor and solenoids would be worth something to the military vehicle crowd, HMMWV people specifically. The entire winch might actually sell well to that lot; you might look on steel-soldiers.com, think they have forums there. Might also look on Ebay, see what such parts are going for.

Adding a second battery for the winch alone either means another alternator to charge the batteries in series, like the bizarre 0-12-24V system used on the CUCV's, or some very creative switching and wiring to parallel the batteries for charging and then disconnect them and reconnect them in series to run the winch. While both are certainly feasible, either are gonna cost a fair bit and you're back to square one. I think the $-sensible options are either to sell it and buy a 12V winch, or convert it and sell the parts.

it could be done pretty simply with a series/parallel switch.. we do it quite often in the boats... tho series/parallel switches can be pricey....
