Changed Starter. Issues with old one

I had to change my starter out today in my Blazer. The new one works great. The problem is with the old one. It has a broken nose cone. The last time I changed it, it also had a broken nose cone too. Not a big deal but I am out half my core deposit.

I think there is some issue that I am not seeing. Has anyone else had this problem? Were you able to fix it?

The old one stopped engaging the flex plate.

Thanks,

Colter

What condition is your flex plate in? Sounds like the nose cone isn't properly engaging the flex plate. Are you using proper Starter bolts?

Hopefully someone can chime in, i'm guessing you need to be shimming these starters to help them properly engage. That, or you are running the wrong nose cone for your flex plate gear tooth count.

Do you have the torque strap attached to the rear of the starter? That helps to keep the starter nose from breaking off.

I don't have a torque strap. Does some one have a part number? Hopefully it comes with install instructions or a picture. Some where along the line it must of got deleted.

Thanks

My membership fees working for me once again.

It is going to be a junk yard item or someone on here that has one they'll either give you or sell you. As far as bolting it up, there is a stud (supposed to be anyways) sticking out of the rear of the starter that one end attaches to and the other bolts to a threaded hol in the side of the block (5/16" - 18 thread).

There's a chance I might have one so when I go out to the garage in 30 minutes or so i'll check and if I have one it's yours for the cost of shipping.

Last I checked GM still sells this and it was cheap, like $7 or so.
I might have a couple laying around but for the price new I wouldn't bother looking for mine, too messy and I could do better thing with my time, like posting here.:thumb:

i've never seen or heard of such a thing. my race truck broke at least one nose cone off this year and was having starter problems for a while with the stock style starters. maybe i better find one of those too.
