This is probably a dumb question but, Does anyone know how to change a belt on an 89? I don't have the decal to show how how to put a new one on.

As far as how, you just put a ratchet or wrench on the idler pulley's bolt and loosen it. Then pull it off of the belt. Remove belt. Reinstall new belt in proper order. Retension idler bolt.

Done.

When you get it routed right easily it takes 5 minutes. When I had my '92 TBI truck I could do it in 5 minutes tops if I didn't already have my ratchet and socket out and had to remove the belt from the packaging.

Last time I did one was years later and it took me forever to figure out the routing due to having to go and get a new belt and not being able to remember how it went.

start by looking at the pulleys...if they are smooth where the belt runs, the back of the belt rides on that surface, if they are grooved, the grooved part of the belt rides on that surface.

I just learned about newer cars that don't uses a tensioner.......dumb.......a belt has to be stretched on.

Just had to share

No chance of a tensioner going bad and the belt slipping off or just the belt getting glazed or damage due to being loose. Pretty ingenious really.

The tensioner is spring loaded, do not loosen it. You can use the wrench in the pulley side to rotate the tensioner up to relieve the tension.

If there's no belt routing diagram under the hood, make sure you sketch out the pattern before you pull the old belt off, it can save you some time. And keep the old belt for a trail spare/backup. There are belt removal tools that fit in the tensioner hole, but with as much space as you have in a K5, a ratchet is fine. Or you can muscle it by hand if you are inclined.
