Well ive searched and searched and havent really come up with much. on my dana 60 the pinion bearings are worn and have a ton of play in them. so i ordered up a master install kit for it, im keeping the stock gears. just freshening everything up. what all is needed to press the bearings on/off the pinion? also in theory i should not have to re shim the gears correct? any help or tips or suggestions of tools i should have would be appreciated.

thanks.

You shouldn't need to change any shims. Keep everything really, really clean and it should be a remove and re-install deal.

You will need a press to get the carrier bearings on (you'll be cutting them off unless you have the specific tool to get them off, you're replacing them anyway, just be careful not to damage the shims) and you'll need the press to get the lower pinion bearing on and off.

Otherwise you need a torque wrench that reads inch pounds (to measure pinion bearing preload) and a dial indicator (to measure backlash).

Thanks. I have it pretty much planned down what Ive gotta do. Ive just been lookin at what kinda bearin puller(s) I should look into having as well.

For carrier bearings I have this puller... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OTC-...t=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item35b060e50e it works perfectly.

For just about any other bearing I have several different sizes of these bearing splitters. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OTC-...t=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item439827d888

For a person that does alot of differential work this is a nice carrier bearing puller. http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=7406

You can cut the cage with side-cutters, then cut the inner race with a cut-off tool or a die grinder cut-off blade. Put a "V" cut into the inner race, don't cut though, get close, then chisle and hammer lightly until the innerrace breaks.

I have something quite similar to the first one. I was looking at them bearing splitters today when I was out and about. Ill prob pick one up when I get ahold of my parts.
