Changing the Oxygen Sensor

Run the engine for about 15 minutes and then take the sensor out. Helps to loosen it up some.

No prob.

Make sure you have the correct tool to get at the o2 sensor. Wrenches that fit, perhaps an o2 sensor, correct size sockets, etc etc. I replaced mine on my Tracker about 2 years ago and it was not fun.

7/8", if a wrench doesn't work, break the top of it off and you can use a normal socket.

You can use a box end if you disconnect it first, then slip the wrench over the wire. Or just cut it, if you are replacing.

If you don't know it's bad, suggest not destroying and saving it.

I used an O2 socket on my Tracker but the thing was so rust welded in place that I couldn't get it off. The damn socket kept flexing open...surprised it didn't break. Ended up cutting off the pig tail ("no going back now..."), putting a regular deep well socket on it, and then with a breaker bar and some cursing getting it loose.

Bad assumption. Code may mean the O2 is working correctly and the truck is simply running rich or lean. AFAIK no code definitively says that the O2 sensor is the sole culprit.

It is an item that fails of course, if it's original it's not going to hurt anything if you change it, assuming the replacement is good. Suggest AC Delco replacement only.

Edit:by no means am I saying it can't be bad. Only that the system has no way of testing the sensor...the ecm simply expects a certain response under certain conditions, and if it doesn't see that throws a code. If the system was self sensor diagnosing, you wouldn't have multiple codes as a possibility.

I broke an intake valve stud, got a rich O2 code...because the runner filled with fuel and flooded the other cylinders, which the ECM couldn't adjust for, leading to rich exhaust, not a bad O2 sensor.

What code did you get? A bad 02 will usually set a 13.
If code 44 or 45 it is usually is some other problem.

i didn't see the number. just the words.

i just put new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor on last night. made a good improvement.
