My POS Chrome thermostat housing cracked on me, went to Napa got a HD cast one for 8.55 OTD. Now should I just use the paper gasket or use RTV and Paper or just RTV. I want to do this once and only once.

Thanks

Everybody has their ways. I've done just paper and had no problems. Just did one 3 weeks back and used silicone and paper. Worked also

Unless the "gasket" is a rubber o-ring, I always use the paper gasket with a thin coating of RTV on both sides. This holds the gasket in place and helps seal up any small imperfections on the housing and manifold.

I've done paper, paper+RTV, RTV only. As long as there is something there to seal it, it should be fine.

Thats what I do.

same, never had any issues with leaking, with the way these intakes and outlet housings corrode and pit over time, it's the main reason i use the rtv to help seal those imperfections.

I use the gasket but i spray it with hi-tack sealer. I don't like using RTV on anything other than the front/rear of intake gaskets and four corners of oil pan gasket (if 4 piece style).

x eleventy.... I'm not huge on RTV, except in specific apps (intake and pan corners, etc)..... I much prefer sealants, hi-tack, #300, etc...

I'm a huge fan of Permatex Super 300.....

I put thin layer on the housing, put on gasket and put thin layer of RTV on the other side, got it all bolted in and no leaks or issues. :D

I looked over the old one, it had a small hole in the crease of the neck, Cheap ass chrome crap. I got it for free so I couldnt complain, but glad I found it with the truck sitting, wouldve sucked been going 75mph out of town and it went bad on me.

not sure what they're making those chrome outlets out of, but i quit using them, after the FIRST one i in stalled warped, bolt holes lower than the center type of warping. Cheap crap i guess.

I just use a factory style one and clean it up to look half way decent. never had any issues yet.

Funny part is, the chrome ones run from 15-20bux. I got an OEM HD one from Napa fro 8.55 OTD. ITs a nite and day difference is weight and quality. I did spray my new one with some Hi-Temp engine paint (outside only). looks good. :D

Like they say, chrome wont get you home. lol
