You know what really made me mad today? I went to O'reallys auto parts to buy oil and a filter for my truck, I spy the big 5-quart jug in my favorite Valvoline high mileage blend, and a Fram high mileage filter, all for $19. I go home change my oil, and when I go check the level, it's at the "add" mark. That seems odd, so I check again, making sure the dipstick is all the way in. Still low. So I grab the jug and look closely, it's only 4-quart jug! Since when does that happen? And I don't know of any cars today that take only 4 quarts of oil. So I had to run down to O'reallys and vent to them while I buy another quart of oil for my truck.

Really annoying.

Hmmm, 4 quarts....must have been one of those small gallons. Not like the big gallons that hold 5

Actually, your mistake was thinking it was for your vehicle.
It was actually for my Mercedes V6.
It holds 8 quarts!!! In a 6 cylinder!

So I could just buy 2.

You know, hot dogs of 10, hot dog buns of 8? It'll get fixed one day. Remember the first time I saw those I was like sweet 5qts. But at least I noticed while still in the store.

My Mini Cooper takes 4 quarts. So did my Subarus. And my Mitsubishi. And my Hondas. And my Toyota. Come to think of it, most of the cars I have owned took 4 quarts.

I just buy an extra quart for the K5. :D

Yeah sorry most small cars take 4 quarts. My g/fs corolla takes 4.

Was the jug definitely labeled 5 quart? Cause I know when I worked at advance people used to assume our gallon jugs were 5 quarts because they had just come out at like walmart.

Also used to get a kick out of people who couldnt wrap their heads around the fact that oil change specials are on 5 quarts and a filter not 1 gallon a quart and a filter.... :doah:

I got sucked in by those "specials" on the ends of an aisle in parts stores and Walmart before too--they are often only 4 qts,not 5,and they usually throw in a crap filter like a Fram to boot...one day I almost bought a jug of 10W-30 Castrol with a Penzoil filter for 15.99,then decided it was STILL too much,at a discount store...
Later the same day when I visited a "real" parts store I used to work at years ago, they had Wolf's Head oil for 1.99 a quart and a Wix filter was about 4 bucks--so I got 5 quarts and a GOOD oil filter for less than I'd have paid at the "bargain store"...sometimes those "deals" aint so good, you can do a lot better at a real parts store!...(if I wanted to be really cheap I could have got 5 quarts of "Peak" oil at 1.59 per qt,and a "Group 7" filter for 1.99,made by Purolator--still better than what the bargain store wanted for 4 qts, and the cheap filter!)..

Their packaging has changed. They have no 5 qt jugs anymore.

Gotta go to walmart and get the 5.5's.....

Its really dumb, but i've now started going out of my way to go to walmart for fluids....hate buying individual quarts for the oil change.

A-Crap filter

B-Read the label on the oil.

(Sounds harsh but ask me about the time I bought 5 quarts of synthetic 5w30 and then one quart of dino goo 10w30...whoopsie...I noticed AFTER I had pulled the drain plug. Ended up having to run to Walmart at 8:30pm when the ex finally got home because she refused to pick a quart up for me.)

For the record my 2.0L I4 Chevy Tracker/Suzuki Vitara uses 5.5 quarts and the Suzuki 2.5 and 2.7L V6's use 5.8 quarts (yet somehow 6 quarts was what always brought it up to the line). I want to say the Toyota truck engines are similar. Personally I think the American small blocks have rather low oil capacities for their size.

I realize that its Amsoil, and not your brand, but here is how they sell it.
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/xlt.aspx

All my vehicles use the same engine oil except for my small stuff. lawn mower, etc. So I bought a 30 gallon drum.
Don't go by the prices here, find a dealer and he can usually beat these.
I looked, but Valvoline does not seem to sell bulk.
But you can find a jobber in your area that will, I bet.

Of course, if you only use it in one vehicle, its probably not worth it.

Some small cars even take 3.5 qts. Bot these were really small econoboxes.

I just bought a jug that said "5+ QUARTS!!!" and I'm thinking, "5+?!, do they not measure it out anymore? WTF!" I read the label and it said 5 liters (5.5somethingish qts). Do I have to learn liters now?

I used to change my oil when I first started driving but then I got smart. By the time I got enough oil and a good filter at Autozone/Kragen/etc it was $20-$25. So $25 and I have to mess up my driveway and then take the oil back in to be disposed of.
The guy that's always worked on my family's cars has a lube shop, $30 and he does the oil change, he disposes of everything and while it's up on the lift I can get a good look at everything and he greases it all. Seems worth the extra $5-$10.

1 liter = 1.05 quarts, so you basically got a tiny more.

That's really funny.........my 87 Burb 5.7L takes 6quarts! :D

Of course.....I do have that oil cooler that makes me add an extra quart.

Really doubt your oil cooler drains, unless you specifically drain it seperately.

So, even though its a 6 qt system, i bet you only are really changing 5qts.

I disconnect and drain my Oil cooler every time! Why do an oil change and leave a quart of used oil in the system when it takes an extra 5 minutes to remove a line and let it drain?

Heck, I know guys that will flush their engine at every change!!

Ok then, you win. I sure don't.

Hell, i had the truck for 2 yrs before i realized i HAD an oil cooler :doah:

I'm sure that running that used oil in the system isn't hurting anything, but I don't want to take that chance.

I change mine religiously every 3k, so i'm not too worried about it.
