On my 86, I wired in a amp gauge and a fuse, blew the fuse the other day and it kinda melted the wires at either end of the fuse.

Didn't have time to mess with it so I unplugged the 2 wire connector off the back of the alternator and put one of those plugs in to continue the circuit

Alternator keeping the truck running but won't charge.

Is not having that plugged in not gonna allow it to charge? Even with jumper plug in?

Battery and alternator are new

So I cut out the fuse and wired it up and re plugged in the connector. Alt seems to be charging ( did this by the road so I didn't have a meter) but the amp gauge is pegged past 60 and the battery light stayed on all the way home, even with the headlights off it stayed pegged and the battery light stayed on.

I do have msd ignition and a box also If that matters.

A) It does need to be plugged in,
B) Something is wrong if your melting wires & popping the fuse.
C) You tapped into one of the two wires that come out of this plug? Couldn't it just be run from the battery? This would should you exactly what the battery is actually going through, instead of what the alternator is 'trying' to do.
