Was out hunting today 30 miles from home and had the batteries not charging light come on. Saw lots of deer no elk. Started for home ASAP and noticed that light and message went away at 1800 to 2000 RPM. So kept manually shifting to keep the truck in the needed range and made it home. '05 Chevy D-Max K2500 HD.

Suspect is alternator. Checked all connections (tight) and checked voltage at batteries and alt. (12v) at idle. No climb in volts with reving. Truck off batteries climbed to 12.4v. Anybody else run into this? Just want some input before tearing apart and spending money.

Thanks Guys.

Oh and being a D-Max it should be about the same change out as a gas motor I think? Sorry my first diesel still dealing with the learning curve. Looks like one power wire and a plug, then just a couple bolts and belt. Thanks.

Sounds like the beginning of the end for the alt. The newer trucks are pretty smart so any drop in voltage will be picked up and put on the display.

New alt. Should be a 105 amp stock.

Talked to parts guy today. Putting in new alt. but said there where 2 avail., 105 amp and 145 amp, so need to take in to compare.

Got it all disconnected, now to figure out the idler/tensioning pully so I can remove the belt. Turning into a 15 min swap instead of 10. Oh darn.....:D

Well and the time it takes to drive to the parts house, and typing this so really 45 min. I type really slow. :haha:

Ok alt. out and ready to go to parts house. Waiting on wife to have lunch while we are out. So now 1 1/2 hours. Still not that bad.:haha:

The 145 amp was supposed to be an upgrade or snowplow prep package, there was also a dual alt. set up as well.

It's a 105 amp I would almost guarantee.

Winner! 105 amp $150.00. $37.00 lunch with wife so $187.00 spent and back from lunch @ 2:35 mst truck running and putting out 14.7 volt by 2:52pm. Not bad now the power steering pump on another day, only 3 weeks left in hunting season (12 year olds first year).

Now where did I put those Elk?

I just read this but the 105 and 140 amp should be the same size case so you should have went with the 140 amp unit instead.

Ehh. Could have but once my '90 is back up and running, and I put a utility bed on it, and maybe lift and tires, I will probably sell the '05. Soooo........ You know like 2 years.

No, I am pushing to have it done by next summer. To many rigs for two people around here and no attachment to the D-Max so it goes on the chopping block. Although I keep having to travel 500 miles for weeks at a time for work so we will see weather the '90 gets done in a resonable time of if I keep the D-Max for being on the road. The buisness has evolved in the last 6 months.

Huh, I would have figured the parts guy would have warned you about the 105 amp model.
Due to the lower current capability, they use a lower grade regulator in the 105. Its switching frequency is different from the 140.

As a result it emits a supersonic screech that is just above the hearing of humans. GM does not worry about it, since no one can hear it.

About the only things that it really bothers are ungulates.

Drives them mad.

Will clear out any within 20 miles in all directions........:D:D

Fordum.....you so funny. We actually have changed tactics here. We park the truck on a high snowy ridge (with the truck turned off) and wait for the wolves to chase them to us. I even have a wolf tag, I will be going for a toofer.

And no elk meat for you.

Now I am going back to watching Firefly on DVD.:D

Still got lots in the freezer. Need to whip up some deer and elk jerky. Then I can send so out.:D

I can't remember if they are or not. The biggest thing is I am pretty sure there is a pulley size change between the two and therefore a belt change. I know in the 6.0 stuff we have to be careful to ge the right alternator and belt packages.

Also I don't actually think there was a 145 amp option on the D-max. Strictly my opinion. I know the books say so but I think it was 105 amp OR the dual 105 amps.
