I am doing a full frame strip and re-paint on an 87 2wd I just picked up. I planned on bead blasting the whole frame then dusting it with some of our favorite zinc chromate self etching primer.

I was looking at using Eastwood 2k or quart spray on chassis black satin paint. The standard spray on specifically states to to spray it over self etching primer. Any ideas why?

The 2k chassis paint doesnt show any instructions but I have a feeling they would have the same warning in the directions.

What can I use that will last a long time that I can spray over the self etch primer?

covering their arse.... self-etching really has nothing to do with what get's put on top.... and really is a pet peave of mine how that term get's thrown around the last decade or so...

if your going to just use RG, than paint, make sure you go with a decent coating, than scuffpad the he!! out of it..

in reality, all topcoats are a product of the system... a better method would be a nice 2 part uro primer over the zinc, sanded THAN painted... or even skipping the RG, and going with a 2-part epoxy, than paint...

but yes, I've done plenty of paintwork with a hardened paint right over RG... not fender, hood type stuff, but parts, frames, etc...

I was just kind of stuck on the RG so if the paint got damaged or worn it still wouldnt rust.

You are saying I would be better off just straight painting it with the 2k black? :edit: nevermind, I a dumb. I would have to use the nice primer is what your saying.

Trying to avoid standard primer due to time, cost, pissing off my neighbors with tons of painting.

.

oh he!! no, never said that.. that's pretty hack IMO... ya wanna put some sort of primer on.. RG, than your paint is fine.. like I said, just go a bit heavier with the RG, and make sure you scuffpad the heck out of it a day or so later prior to paint..

Haha, I re-read and edited my comment right after I submitted that.

I will go with the RG and 2k paint then. How many cans you think it will take of the moler RG for a whole frame?

I am doing springs, suspension and all.

eesh, could be a bit.. 6 cans would be a stretch just to get everything green..... not necessarily covered great... I'd be much much happier having 10...

Dang, at that point would you just use the quality 2k primer, if trying to be budget conscious?

No where local has RG. Its 17 a can on amazon...

I also need to paint the body, could I just buy a gal. of 2k primer and do frame and body with the same primer?

at that point, I would skip the zinc chromate, and just get a gallon setup of 2 part epoxy.. works great for frames... stick well, super tough, and they scuff/sand VASTLY better than they did yrs ago... epoxy over raw, scuff, paint...

Does Southern polyurethane inc supply a good quality company / product?

I was thinking about spraying the whole frame with their epoxy and then all the under body parts with it aswell.

Their tech sheet says it doesnt need a top coat, I am worried about UV destroying the product without a top coat.

If their products are good I may go with them for primers too. I am not impressed with the offerings at my local O'Reilly's and Sherwin Williams is way pricey.

The frame and underside see very minimal effort UV light unless you spend a lot of time on your lid.

I was planning on painting the grille support and wheel wells with it, those see a decent bit of sunlight. Just didnt want to spend all that time on it and then like 5 years later it look all crappy.
