Went out on the trails last weekend and again was limited due to my carb. I have the ability to do a 5.3 swap, but just can't justify all the work while i have a very strong running carb'd 350 in it. What suggestions do you guys have for a "cheap" efi system? I am trying to stay within a few $100 dollars. If it gets too high on the price, I will just go the route of the 5.3 swap.
 
couple hundy ain't gonna happen.. factory TBI is your best economy choice.. but even getting smoking deals on parts, etc, your prolly looking at $500 or so...

Yeah, and if I get in that price range it makes more sense to go with the 5.3

With that thought getting more and more clearer, how much do you think I could get out of a very strong running Goodwrench 350 and a Holley Truck Avenger carb?
 
Oh boy!!!

Just found a deal on C-list locally. Its a used Power Injection EFI system. Any body heard of this company? Good or bad?:dunno:
 
Keep in mind that your camshaft selection is critical for a successful EFI swap. You will not be happy with the results of an EFI swap unless you install a cam with the right profile for fuel injection control. You need something with a high lobe separation angle to ensure that there is no valve overlap. Fresh O2 in the exhaust (happens when both the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time) is bad news for EFI as it really messes with the O2 sensors.

I took a mid 70s 350 and bolted a TBI intake + EFI system on and it never did run right afterwards. It was definitely driveable but not like stock. A chip would have helped as the carb heads, compression ratio etc don't match TBI but it was always very, very rich at idle because of the valve overlap.
 
I played this game for a long time trying to find the cheapest way to get FI on my rig. Went back and forth for a long time. Looked at Affordable EFI (which looks like the best price for a "kit"), looked at purchasing an entire pulled off TBI system from someone else, ect. I finally said screw it and was going to look for a 5.3 with a 4l60e combo and just save some cash to do it. But that's when I looked on craigslist (never a good idea :haha:) and found a front end wrecked '89 K5 that I purchased for $900. I sold the 700r4 that was in my k5 for $400, and swapped in the entire TBI motor and tranny into it, reworked the harness, and then sold both 10 bolts for $100 each, and some other misc off it for another $100 or so. Then took shell and frame to scrap yard and got $200 for it. So I actually made out on top on the deal :D. It took me about 6 months to finish the swap and get everything done (had some wiring issues to work through), but in the end that was the cheapest I could find to get FI on my rig.

I would have loved to do a 5.3 swap. Can't deny the benefits of a new LS motor, but with 2 small kids and not wanting to spend my entire life savings on a wheeling rig, I figured that was the best I could do.


And none of this rambling probably did you any good did it? :doah:
 
You bring up a good point that it is usually cheaper to just buy a complete running EFI engine than to part one together for a successful swap.

I wouldn't turn my nose up at a 4.8L either. You can get it in there and running and swap a 5.3L or 6.0L in later and already have all the fuel injection done. They can be bought complete for like 4 or $500
 
Buy a parts truck. My best bet has been rigs with blown TH700R4's. Can buy them for iron price usually.

Pretty much what I did. Except the 700r4 in my donor truck was rebuilt 7000 miles prior to me purchasing (found reciept in glove box :woot:). But there are a lot of these out there. It does take more work on your part to complete the swap, but if cost is more the issue, great way to go
 
Well, I talked to the guy and he had is set up on a square body drag truck. Said the system worked awesome till he started pushing the 700hp range, and was running out of fuel.

As for the cam, I am not worried about the seperation. I have had a buddy with a bore scope in there before checking stuff out, and he had told me the overlap was non-exsistant with that cam. I talked the guy down to $350, and he said he would help me set it up on my truck:waytogo::woot:

That's a pretty good deal, and if he is legit and willing to help you get it set up right, that's the cherry on top right there. FI is the tits, you will love it :waytogo:
 
I did my Megasquirt/TPI for like $400, then probably another $100 to go distributorless, then sold off all the old parts and got like $175 back out. There was quite a bit of planning, labor and learning involved, though.

People avoid having to learn how to tune and spend big money to do it. But over the course of the years, you may spend just as much time scratching your head and turning to tech support / shops to fix the issues that come up. How many people say "Darn, I wish I never wasted time learning how to build an engine" or "what a shame I learned a useless skill like setting up gears".
