ok my friend and i were talking about this at school today, college classes are boring monday, ok well i thought about buying the kc hi lights cheap caseing and then buying a cheap hid kit off ebay, and now i would have HID offroad lights........ do i have a chance with this? has anyone done it? if so pics would be awesome. thanks guys, if this topic has been broughten up SORRY

yea i have a buddy that did it. i havent seen them yet but he braggs about them. he had the 130 watt and says they are BRIGHT! he said they were brighter than my 150 watt daylighters. i plan on buying the cheap casings from walmart, painting them black and doing the same thing.

The quality of ebay ones is questionable. Buy them from here:

Lots of the bmw guys buy them. YOu can get whatever bulb style you need, whatever color temp, etc. I am running 55W 5000K or 6000K ( i forget, the white ones) on my bimmer and the rock. Just make sure you are putting them in quality housings with good reflectors, or they will shine light all over the place. They are BRIGHT.

Mine were about $100 when done, but i upgraded to 55W instead of 35W

A true bowl-shaped reflector is better than a plastic car headlamp housing, but it still isn't designed for a HID tube. It would not be useable on the streets, but would give you lots of light off-road. I like the idea because it doesn't require upgrading your electrical system like giant halogen bulbs do. It's just hard to predict what the lighting pattern will be.

kragen / checker has awsome hid light in 7 inch or 4 inch 100 a piece internal ballast 2 wire hook up. There is alot of peple taking off 6 hundred dollar hid's and puting these on.

individual and ya thats them everyone into glamis and offroad out here is running these, best money u can spend and if you roll it or get jacked you are not out a couple grand. im going to put 5 or 6 on a top light bar and 2 or 3 on the front.

Hids would make some awesome off-road light, biggest concern I have is that they really work best in an Hid enclosure as said before, anyone seen any hid light housings available to purchase? Maybe find a truck with some simple square hid lights that would be usable..

THey make HID bulbs in each size, like normal bulbs. 9005, 9006, etc.

so if i posted a pic of a light bulb you might be able to tell me? also i work at autozone now do you think they have hid kits???

If they don't you might be able to get them. Never looked for them there though

Yes, and each of these is a hack. They aren't "actually" any of those sizes, they just make adapter fittings so that the HID tubes will fit in those housings. A 9004, 9005, etc. socket is designed around a halogen (filament) bulb. Even if you get the HID arc in the same place, the lighting distribution will be different. Not to mention transverse vs. lateral filaments. The "cut-off" is very important with HID, unlike halogen bulbs.

Check out the difference in glare and "rainbows" when you pass a late-model cadillac vs. a rice-boy who stabbed in HID tubes with adapters (i.e. eBay 9005, 6, 7 kits).

It does seem to me that round is better and for all I know the O'Reilley's kit serves as a decent projector.
