Cheap winches?

A couple of friend of mine have them. Bought like they and have no bad reports. They are slow, but hey, they work and are cheap! Not bad for $299... I think they're made by Chicago Electric.

get one of those new tmax winches, designed in aussieland, made in china... they are supposed to be decent.

The HF winch ratings are misleading. If you look at the instruction manual for the 9K winch you will see it is really only 4.5K with single line and 9K only with a snatch block on double line. I think the 8K winch is really 4K unless using a double line pull although the manual no longer states that.

HMMM

They are almost the same exact thing as the milemarker electric sieries and ramsey REP series. They are not fast (said many times before) they heat up easily (due to lots of spins from the tiny motor) and are truly meant for intermitent (sp) use. That being said we have on of the HF on a multi mount, and I have the cheap ramsey (REP 8.5) bolted to my K5. They work but I wouldn't want to pull more than 10 ft with one. I am a rocks only guy so 10 ft is about as far as I usually have to winch.

If you have a PTO output on your transfer case or gearbox ( I do not what you have) you could find a deal on a used HD PTO winch. My buddy runs one, and it is seriously strong. Check the heavy equipment yards or your Edison company boneyard. They can be had for cheap, and are available up to at least 20K pound rating. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

good call... PTO winches freakin rock! you may think you're rig is stuck, but with 20-30,000 lbs pulling on it... its either comin out or yanking off your recovery point. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The HF winch looks just like the MM but they are alot different if you compare specs.I got my MM 8000 from 4WPW for $317+ tax with free shipping.

Its not fast but it is better than nothing.Im way happy with it.

I just got my E12000 Milemarker winch a few days ago and it looks nice. It's got beefy 3/8" cable and came with a mounting plate, roller fairlead and cover. I wont have it mounted until spring because I'm lacking a job, but I'll let you know how/if it pulls my 44's out of waist deep mud. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

There is a 3 way comparison (raymart vs ramsey vs superwinch) in the new issue of the JP rag. All three of these winches are a step up from the HF and MM but the bottom end for price of a supposed reliable winch. It is a quick read so just thumb through it at the store next time you are there.

I have a cheep harbor freight one hooked up to my trailer as far as I am concerned that would be the only thing it's good for, it is extremely slow but it works well.
