So I've asked a similar question before, but know it seems it's not a want, but a need. I think my rear end is going out.

I currently run stock 3.08's with 33's. I don't wheel other than to go hunting but I want to occasionally run it in the mud. So I need to either fix the 10 bolts or replace them with something else. It seems the cost of a 10 bolt carrier and gears is really expensive. So it seems silly to me to fix the 10 bolts when a 14 bolt and a 44 from the junkyard is only $500, with 4.10's. But, I don't need the heavier axles.

I can pick up some H2 wheels for $200 and I already need new tires, so the cost of going 14 bolt/44 would only be $700 except for ujoint and of course, tires. The ebrake will bolt right up I think to the 3/4 ton drums, so I can't think of any cheaper way to fix my problem.

How much would a set (front and rear) of 10 bolt carriers with ring and pinion cost me? How hard is it to do?

10 bolt carriers are pretty easy to come by, I'm sure there are plenty of people on this board who would love to sell you theirs for cheap.

As for gears, each set will run ~$150. Replacing the bearings and seals is always a good idea at the same time, which is ~$100 per axle. Keep in mind that setting up gears isn't a simple remove and replace job, everything needs to be shimmed just right or you will be replacing it all again in short order.

It may be more cost effective for you to just find another 10 or 12 bolt and just swap it in. They're cheap and easy to find :dunno:

around here theres plenty of FREE 10bs with 3.08, i personally have a pair. come and take the rear. i would bet you can get a whole new rear axle for a case of beer. so total cost would be about 50 bucks for new ubolts.

Go get a 14SF. Easier to find the gears you want in a complete axle, you can get it in 6 lug, lighter than a 14FF, you'd just need to find the right front axle. Not sure how common 10 bolt 4.10's were.

Even 3.42's were a huge step up from 3.08's IMO.
