check engine light stays on

i have a 89 k5 that the check engine light comes on and stays on, there are no trouble codes. anyone know what might be causing this?

comes on and stays on, implies that it goes off, or isn't on at times. which is it?

light comes on right at start up, does not turn off at all.

mine does this also, never kicks a code. i took mine to local gm dealership and used their scanner.. no code....

my CEL comes on at times, maybe i'll hook a scanner to it to check it out

An easier way to do it that is free is to take a paperclip and jump the two terminals in the ECM to give you your code. That's how I found out why my light was on.

Theres a thread on here about it, ill see if I can find it.

Yeah, paperclip works, there's also a gm specific obd1 plug in light that works well... i think i'll hook a scanner to it and see what info i can get

That was my plan if the paperclip thing didn't work, but it worked like a charm for me
