Check engine light

When I switch my 208 into any 4whl setting the check enine light comes on. Any ideas? There is no problem driving it YET. Kinda creepy feeling though.

Maby the lights or lettering got swapped around somehow.
Does the check engine light come on when you turn the ignition switch to on? It should. Then it should go out after the engine starts.

Hmmmmmmm.........That's wierd! ***Generally***, the check engine light indicates a fuel-related or vacuum-related problem. Is the 4x4 on an 88 activated or controlled by vacuum at all?

The light is actually coming on when I get her into any setting in 4whl drive......In 2whl. the light will go off as soon as it starts to crank and stays off after firing up...

Thats what I am saying theres only a 2 wire plug thing and that speedo cable.......

When I read something like this it makes me really appreciate my '74. What good are those lights to the general public anyway? I can see someone wondering why the light is still on after they've opened the hood to make sure the engine was still there. It may as well say "Broken Engine" or "Take me to a mechanic" or what the manufacturer really wants is to convince you to do is"Take vehicle to your dealership". Otherwise it might actually tell you what the light means. Like "Vacuume Leak", or "Low Vacuume". I know what the Oil pressure guage means and the temp guage means but what the hell is "Check Engine" supposed to mean? I feel your pain...Good luck!

Ok. Beings the check engine light and the light telling you the 4X4 is engaged are right next to each other. I would suspect some kind of a short between the two. You might want to pull the dash and check it out.
That is the only thing I can think of that would cause that to happen.

Ya know that mysterious light that you guys are taking aboot "4x4".....it has never come on during my whole ownership of the vehicle.... I will check out that theory....anyone think I can just hook in that "key" to pull a code? Again thanks guys for the help and suggestions.

Someone had the dash apart and put the bulbs in the wrong sockets...?

The 2 wire plug thing you mentioned on your Tcase is the 4WD sensor indicator. It just let's you know when you shift into 4hi or lo. I would think the bulbs got switched in the check engine place or something since it's coming on everytime you put it in 4wd.

What year is your blazer? My 89 blazer has the SES (service engine soon) light on the right side of the 4x4 light in the speedo head. Yours should be the same? If you didn't buy the rig new, it's possible someone else had the dash apart at some point in time and put the SES light cover on the wrong side? Just thought it might be something simple like that. You might check that.

here's an easy test -- pull the wire from the Tcase and jump the two pins together with the ignition on -- see what light come's on ... then ground the diagnostic pin on the ALDC and see which light blinks ... easy test to see if they are wired up wrong without pulling the dash
