Check this out, poor mans locker video!!

Would something like that cause any vibrations? or is it not enough to worry about. It looks pretty simple. I have a open 60 I wanted to weld now I can do this and remove it easily if I dont like it:D .

Came up for me. I would ratherso it the old way that I have done them before. It is still removable.

Ira, I found the box that I kept my spare D60 Spiders in. Next trip down I will bring them. I should be able to have them welded beforehand so all we would have to do is swap them in.

Sweet, I still have my 14FF spiders, side gears and shims if you need them to make a ball out of. Did you get your detroit figured out?

No I never looked at it. I have been way too busy. I have been driving it from Temecula to SD and back every day though. I figured on an average it will cost about $700 in gas per month, add that to the possibility of a costly repair.......WOW.
I did fix the vent on the transfer case though. Only took about 30 Min.

I dont know, but it looks like it would work well. It may also be more raliable than just welding the spider gears.:confused:

i dont know how well that would work since the gears are conical... they want to come out. i know the strap of metal is there and the gear should bind into place, but binding is also pusing out. i would weld more then he is sugesting. also placing screws into a "thin" casting is asking for cracks i think. balance COULD be an issue but could be lessened by doing it on both sides as well as taking up some force from one gear to two.

im an overkill guy and love the idea shown, but would want to weld a lot more than sugested. still easier to undo than it is with full welding.

I have seen guys weld up rears before by taking small chucks of steel and welding them into the gears. Kind of the same thing as putting the gear in and strapping and welding.
Also not so big on adding screws into the cast?:eek1:
 
What sort of axle is he using in that demonstration? Clearly it's not a 14BFF....

I am looking at a set of "takeout" spidergears and crossshaft that sit on my desk as a paperweight...and there is nowhere near the kind of room between the spiders as he has in that video.....certainly not enough for an additional spider to just "drop in" as he demonstrates... :dunno:
 
not a 10 bolt though, it's a 3rd member he's working on, maybe a Ford? unit?

just watched it again, and again, he's using the extra spider gear to lock the other spider gear with the two side gears,,,kinda interesting.:thinking:
 
That should work with just about any axle besides a 14bff (or any other axle with quad spiders, if there are any).
