I am in the process of figuring out where to spend my money on this truck since it has become my dailey driver. I want to check out the motor to see if it will last till next summer or not. What can I do besides a compression test on the cylinders to get an Idea of the shape that it is in. I need it this winter to pull my two sleds and a trailer about (1700 lbs). I would rather put my money into tires and tranny work but It needs to run. Its a 78 K5 with a 400 th350 and 203.

Any Ideas would be great!!

Replace ALL fluids for the engine and service the tranny - you should shake out or notice any bugs by doing these things. And do a tune up.
Also check drivetrain for the usual maintenance things.
