I was thinking about building a I6 chevy (gasoline) engine into a diesel engine.

Would this be a very bad idea??

How much work would be needed to build one of these succesfully. And would it even be worth it in the end??

I would have to say you would be reinventing the wheel, with that said there are plenty I6 diesels out there such as cummins, isuzu, perkins, international, duetz allis. well you get the idea. Looks to me like that would require a lot of machine work and the compression ratio would have to be raised and the 292,250 engine block would be under a lot of stress. so i would not recomend to try to do do it . :doah:

the old 5.7l diesels chevy made in the 70's come to mind when thinking of converting gas engines to diesel...:doah:

Those were Olds diesels (:)) and the blocks were EXTREMELY beefy compared to the gas versions. But were externally the same as the gas ones.

Hmmmm.....Have you recently been in a situation where you had to hold in a fart or two?
I burst into laughter reading this.

Hey man you had an idea and went with it. Not very far..but still thought about it. I'm sure someone thought of that and why we have so many different options now.

Hell if i said it wouldn't work and someone made it i'd feel like a jackass so fire away ;)

I didn't imply it wouldn't work, just that it would take a lot of retrofitting, and wouldn't be cost effective. Time you make an injector pump work and fit the head with injectors, glow plugs you could buy a used 6b cummins and be way ahead. but it would be interesting to see someone give it a try, after all gm made it work on the olds 350.

I don't think I am gonna go for it....

It definately would be alot more work than it would be worth.

I just liked the idea of being original, plus I wouldn't have to notch the frame rail(s) to fit the 6bt. PLUS I could hook up to the tranny I presently have without the use of funky adapters.

But yeah, I geuss using an existing diesel engine would be the most cost effective way to go.
