Anyone have one. Im thinking about starting to look for a used 2wd prefably manual. I see they have a 4 cylinder 2.9 liter which would be fine my S10 in highschool had a 2.8 V6 so I manage I could get by \

Just wondering if anyone has one and what they think of it. No Im not getting rid of the K5...just looking for something I can fart around with and not have to dump gas into, and also cold AC in the summer would be great too.:thumb:

if you can find an unmolested 4.3 s10, I think you'll be happier
otherwise the colorado is a nice step up in size from the s10
but I wouldn't trade mine for one

now a Taco, maybe

Im thinking about that, but at the same point I had a S10 Blazer and that thing was horrible on mileage. Of course im sure a 4.3 2wd stick would be alot better on mileage too.

My dad has a 98 w/ the 2.4L, 2wd, stick and it does pretty good on mileage. I think its low to mid 20s around town and mid to high 20's on the highway. Knock on wood in 150k miles havent had any major drivetrain problems. The list of what is wrong was an alternator, 2 batt's, 2 sets of tires, a cracked exhaust manifold, catalytic converter broke up and started buzzing, the recline handle on the drivers seat broke, and the HVAC door actuator broke. IMO not bad for that many miles, that age, and the fact it was $8500 brand new.

The engines are a huge piece of crap.
I would have to disagree with you. My mother has a 2005 Colorado, ext. cab,2wd,auto. with the 4cyl. She gets around 28-31mpg. She bought it new in 2005. Never a problem with the truck. I am still actually impressed how snappy it is for a 4 banger. It's quicker than her 95 S-10 was with the 4 banger and a hell of alot roomier and comfortable. I'm 6'3" and 285, I am very comfortable in the thing, where as her S-10, I was cramped.

Scott is saying what the numbers say, those engines had a lot of failiures, but the one that didn't fail are doing great and those people love them.
Reliability is the issue.

Dumpster material. I know of only un-happy owners. The engines are all junk in them. It's a shame they didn't put the 4.2's in them that are in the trailblazer's and envoy platform. Everything on/in them feels super cheap and mileage compared to the older s-10's are horrible. This is coming from owners of both trucks.

i have owned an 05, and i have an 07 right now, they had a little problem in 04 and a few 05's but chevy fixed the problem, other than that i have had no problems with mine great little trucks

A guy at work has a 4x4 one. He bought it new and it has about 140k on it. He said he loves it and hasn't had one problem with it.

Valve guide failure is the biggest problem with them. When I had my shop I did all the dealer work and I can't even count the number of heads I seen each week with less than 10K on them with wore out guides.

To be fair.....

My s10 problems have been:
intake manifold gaskets
injection spider
Driver side exhaust manifold replaced
alternator (and I don't have a big stereo, I do have an optima)
AC compressor (clutch went to hell, lots of noise)
Fuel pump
noisy lifter (replaced @ ~3000 miles)

I think that's it. Other than the injection spider and manifold gaskets, everything was fixed under the extended warranty. It has 108k today and gets 16-20mpg.
