Chevy Dump Bed - PTO from TH400/NP205, Other specs coming in

Pics are a pain as it is on the trailer as we are pointing North in the AM.

Using this page as reference:

I have small holes on top and bottom of the torque converter inspection plate mount, 4 total

I have the machined out tail housing like this

So it is likely I have the non-HD case.

Will confirm when I have time up at its new home. Thank you!!
I told you from the beginning when you posted the first few pictures, you have a 2wd th400.
The skinny holes on a straight edge 4 total that I counted then told the story.

You could find a better one, I might have one.
But if you are considering a 4l80e I say go for it.
You can't go wrong there

I was not arguing :D I appreciate all the help and suggestions here!

I am so happy with this truck! It will be a huge help in our new place. And I will be very happy if the current 454/400/205 last forever, I don’t think I need more than that for what we are doing. I do like the tamed beast feeling of the 8.1 in the blazer just not sure it’s worth it for the dump bed. But please tell me if I am likely to break the non HD case.

So - the property we purchased included a 1982 Titan 35 Motorhome. My plan was to haul it off for scrap as the coach is in bad shape. But I popped awake last night and thought to myself 'wonder if it is a 454/th400 combo.'

I ran the VIN, not great output from my view but it looks like a Chevy P series chassis which probably has the 454 and th475. I am now wondering if I should pull the drivetrain and start a 454 build (not because I need to, hoping the existing engine and trans lasts for a year or 2).
Also looks like the diff is a 14ff.

What are your thoughts on haul-away or part it out?

VIN 1GBKP37W4B3317592

I will get some pics Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.

My big dumb load for tomorrow-

Reminds me when I passed @tRustyK5 towing a project truck around Shasta Lake. That was probably 22 or 23 years ago….

That was 25 years ago now FFS. Some crazy guy in a Corvette "pulls me over" on the I-5 while I'm flat towing a 74 Blazer home to BC from San Diego. Fock I feel old now!!:yikes:

I am going to be living much closer to you by end of month, hope we can connect again someday!

The bosses are not there and the flange is thinner. While it looks like the 400 HD case was common in 85 the original tranny was a manual in this truck. Who knows where the 400 came from....

After a few days of cold starts with the carb I am thinking 8.1/4l80e :D:pimp:
Good combo. some times I wish I had gone big block.

Peanut port madness.

By all means keep the major parts !
Just because what ya’ got is working today there is no guarantee that it will all work tomorrow - mechanical items wear out and/or fail with time and usage.

With minimal effort you will have a spare engine and trans combo on deck if ever needed - or sell them at some point because even a peanut-port BBC rises in basic value the older and less plentiful they become.
As a plus you will end up with a complete set of engine brackets and pulleys that are getting harder to locate.

If I knock the Coach down (tractor), as part of the scrap/part out, will there be a market for the P series chassis?

And the motor home I was talking about.

If - and it is a big if - if I decide to salvage the drivetrain I will also pull the propane tank and 6.5kw Onan generator. I have so much work to do there I am leaning to have it hauled off the property :dunno:

It only takes a couple hours....

I disposed of a diesel pusher to salvage the 5.9L cummins. It is a lot of work if you don't want debris in your yard and take it apart by sawzall in chunks you can lift/load into a dump trailer/truck. My excavator doesn't have a thumb, or I may have tried that as most of the internal framing was rusted out from water leaks.

Not saving “good or sought after” parts has been a major regret of mine over the years - don’t let them get trashed !
Give it away if you must but these parts are not being made anymore - let that sink in.
When I was younger I sent many good parts to the scrap pile just because I had moved on past what level they were.
Example: once I made the upgrade to 1-Ton running gear I thought I no longer had any use for K-20 on down stuff - now all those front axles are in demand again.
All the transmissions, T-cases, gears less than 4.56 and SBC engines even a few 396’s - all scrapped because I didn’t give a damn at that time…

I ain’t say’n ya’ gotta turn into Fred Sanford but please don’t let good parts die a death of being scrapped - put the word out and other Fred Sanford wanna be’s in your area will come and remove that monstrosity for the opportunity to get those parts.
There are certainly better parts being made nowadays but there’s still a market and budget for every level of automotive enthusiasts out there.

I know there is value, just need to sack it up. I have to build a horse ranch before winter (fok-me), let's see how long I can let it be before the wife pulls rank.

@kennyw I will be working on my driveway with you for inspiration!
