Chip burning

thought it had something to do with that...

so if stoich doesn't translate into most powerful or best gas mileage what does it translate into?

Stoichiometric or Theoretical Combustion is the ideal combustion process during which a fuel is burned completely. A complete combustion is a process which burns all the carbon (C) to (CO2), all hydrogen (H) to (H2O) and all sulfur (S) to (SO2). If there are unburned components in the exhaust gas such as C, H2, CO the combustion process is uncompleted.

Even a five year old kid can understand that....hey, someone get me five year old kid! :D :D :D

Be careful....That's what got Michael Jackson in trouble.

perhaps he was just trying to study A/F ratios at Neverland?

OOPS, yeah good point...I was actually thinking of the Marx Brothers sketch but I take your point.
You can't sneeze these days without someone taking it as 'anti' something or endorsing something immoral!!
But I think we're all above that sh*t at CK5! 'Cause we're the good guys! :D

Dirtwarrior,

Bill Hitchcock is one of the guys who helped develop the Prominator, and the last time I talked to him (before Christmas), he was still one of the main guys there. As far as the plug and play aspect, it depends on the computer in you vehicle. MOST mid to late 80's Blazers have a 1227747 ECM running things. Inside the ECM lays the chip. The chips in the 7747 ECM DO "snap" into place. This is replaced with the flash based Prominator complete with a home type computer interface (plug in connector). From what I understand, and I may be wrong here, the origional chip holder is de-soldered and it's flash based replacement is soldered into place. Now with the the newer MEMCAL equipped ECMs, the Prominator will just plug right in.

The .bin is the program that is stored within the chip. This is what you edit to tune the vehicle. This is where the software comes in. I primlarly use TunerPro, but you can also use TunerCat with the same results. Some guys I know actually disect the .bin line by line, make thier changes then reassemble the whole mess and burn it in to thier chips. Now I'm not THAT dedicated to extracting every drop performance out of my BLazer, but it is possible. One other thing, you also need a software package to see what the ECM is seeing so that you know what changes need to be made. Almost everybody uses Win ALDL to do this; from what I've heard, the latest version of TunerPro will also let you do this too.

One of the best things about the Prominator is that, with the pro version, you can have somebody drive the vehicle while you monitor the engine readings and actually make changes to the .bin and load the modified .bin into the Prominator while the engine is running. :D

A good starting place is www.thirdgen.org . There are some real gurus over there who have forgotten more that I'll ever know about chip tuning. They hang out on the DIY Prom board and are very helpful, and don't mind helping us truck guys out either. :D Don't forget to use the earch engine over there either, it will give you enough information to provide hours of reading.

Thanks for the info...

I've spent the last 2 days figuring out how this works and got a lot of help from the prominator thread last night.

On Bills site it says nothing needs to be soldered into place... im still not clear on how "my" computer will hook up to the prominator... it has the 1227747 ecu but i don't know if that means i have to solder or snap.

Here's the e-mail he send me after I wrote him asking about how the Prominator is installed. Hope it clears things up a bit.

Hi Tim,

With the 7747, yes the Prominator is soldered in place...unlike the later
MEMCAL equipped ECMs (those are the ones that "snap into place"). Best
thing to do is just send me the ECM when your Prominator is ready to be
installed. Since each Prominator has to be "built to order", it usually
takes at least a couple of weeks to get it built once the order is
placed...with Christmas around the corner expect a little longer.

There are two cables involved with the Prominator, one short one that
connects directly to the unit, the other end of which you can place
sowewhere inside the vehicle to make it accessable while stuffing the ECM
back where it belongs, and one that will run from that cable to your laptop.
The cable that runs to your laptop has DB25 connectors on each end, and I
normally make those about 4 feet long...but if you need longer then just let
me know. The "adapter" cable that connects directly to the Prominator is
about 6-8" long normally...it's a standard desktop PC printer cable, the one
that runs from the motherboard out to the PC case. Both are ribbon cables.

For the bin switcher, if you decide you want one, I usually make that cable
about 6 feet long...that one is a 9 or 10 pin ribbon cable.

sucks for me... that means i won't have a truck for another month and my mom is kicking me out in a month and a half...

what if i got an ecu out of a junkyard and sent it off to him? Or should i send him the one in the k5 and use the junkyard one for drivin while im waitin for the prominator to get soldered?

I HAVE to have a truck for lookin for jobs... most places are closed by the time all my possible rides get off work. If i don't find a job in a month and a half i am serious screwed.

Will drivin my truck without the prominator be bad for the motor? I don't want to end up washing down my rings or spinning a bearing because i have too much gas in the oil.

the ecm that you need is very common just get your self a extra one from a junk yard and send one of the two that you have in. Just make sure the one from the junk yard works first. ECM's can go bad if exposed to temps above 120 degres or if left open to the elements

all tbi trucks i belive up to 92 check the Gm diy efi site they have a break down of ecms and what they came in the link is in the prominator thread from last night

the conectors that most of this stuff requries are serial ports. The lap top does not have to be anything special a cheap eBay special will do just fine. It does not take much power to run these apliocations. Just take a look at the software requriments of the programs that you will be using and go from there

I can help you with this try thirdgen.org they have a hole msg board deticated to it and sevral articals on ware to get the best equipment to burn your own chips if you use tuner cat they give you the files needed to burn chips for your year truck for free as a demo.
