Chip for fuel economy? How

Does anyone know of the chips for fuel economy? If so how much more do you save (as in mi. Per gallon)any info would be greatly appreciated!
 
I haven't heard of any, these trucks are probably too long in the tooth for anyone to keep messing with trying to market much to them, the market is shrinking, not expanding. If you find anything, it's likely along the same lines of hypertech chips, and they are absolute garbage.

Have to be real careful about "Economy" mods to the injection, the only way to get economy is to reduce fuel demand and/or supply. It's possible, but done wrong, will lead to melted pistons, valves, etc.

What are you getting for economy now? If you are getting around 16MPG freeway, you are doing about as good as you will. FWIW, I've owned/driven K5's that were carbed 305 with OD, carbed 350 without OD, and fuel injected 350 without OD, and all of them get/got nearly identical freeway mileage, right around 16MPG.

If you aren't getting that, need to figure out what is not right about your rig or driving style. 10MPG city is going to be decent FWIW.
 
Wow thats exactly who it is, Hypertech for $163.00 but no specifics on mpg . I'm getting about 11 mpg last time I checked. I now do mostly highway miles. 8 mi. To hgwy then 30 to work. But been odd errands after work (speedo/odometer not working) so I dont have an exact count right now but 496 mi. that would still be good. Im also on 38's with stock gearing so that may also be an issue. But thanks for the heads up on Hypertech.
 
A custom burned chip could accomplish that by making the motor more efficient at burning what fuel it uses. Anything that helps the motor breath and exhale easier will help as well if you have not done that yet.
 
You using GPS to measure your distance then I assume? Obviously have to get good MPG figures to say its bad.

IMO you have to really get it out on the freeway and dedicate some time to JUST the freeway to get a baseline. Fill it up right next to the freeway. Do not top off, let the auto shutoff stop the fill, and don't add more fuel when it does. Take about a 200 mile round trip drive on flat ground, driving the speed limit with cruise (or at least a steady pedal), and fill back up at the same station, preferably at same pump. Calculate your MPG.

Realistically that is the ONLY way to see what the truck will actually do. ANY city driving, hills, or speed will kill MPG very quickly, and has to be avoided to figure out what your theoretical best MPG is. No reason to handicap your results. I know some people say don't worry about it, it's a truck and MPG sucks, but if nothing else, you can tell when something isn't right when MPG is no longer "normal".

I'm a bit anal in that regard, but I've been able to identify problems with spark plugs (worn vs. new), small losses in tire pressure, and how good or bad I've done on tuning the PROM on the truck by MPG, that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.
 
Yep 38s stock gears even a custom tuned chip would have little to no effect.

Proper gearing would help but hey its a truck on 38s its never gonna do very well.
