About a week or so now my choke light will blink rappidly on and off (the light will randomly be dim and then bright and then dim again too) when i am comming to a stop. It does not come on when accelerating, and It doesnt do it all the time though so have yet to come to a good conclusion. Any one have any suggestions, could it be as simple as grounding out or something else? Could it be because the carb needs to be adjusted since its getting colder out? Truck seems to be running fine havnt noticed any odd noises or anything of the sort. Any advice would help thanks

Should probably add that it is a manual choke on the carb as well not an electric choke

Manual choke means either the cluster or the choke is not original. I'm guessing choke.

I haven't dealt with a carb/choke in some time, but there is an oil pressure switch that the electric choke is tied to. My guess is that the switch isn't working right, but that tit is still hooked up.

BTW, since the light is tied to oil pressure, are you sure you have enough oil pressure? Is your oil to the proper level in the engine? If it's tied to slowing down, that might be a real issue.

I believe cluster is orignial but carb is an edelbrock 650 cfm with the ability to add electric choke but no electric choke add on. If i remember right the switch is hooked on behind the distributor right? A little bell shaped thing? And how would i go about testing it? Thanks =]

The bell shaped one is your oil pressure sending unit, and has only a single wire to it. That is what runs the gauge. I *think* the choke switch is tee'd off of that same oil pressure tap however. You'll see it if so.

It's a simple on/off switch AFAIK. Check for continuity across the two terminals with engine off, and engine running.

Only way to verify if the gauge oil pressure is correct is to get an external oil pressure gauge that is known good, and compare it's readings with your gauge.

Yes, the sender with 1 wire is for the gauge. The 2-wire is a switch that powers the choke. This prevents the choke coil from heating before the engine starts.

If the behavior of the light corresponds to RPM and engine temp there's a real chance the pressure is low. Check that out ASAP!

Ill be sure to add that to things to check, oil pressure according to gauge reads okay at about 45 psi under pressure, although i dont know how accuret it is as it will sometimes zero out and bounce back or up and down, so ill be sure to check manualy i suppose. Thanks for the diagram and advice at least now i know where to start

If your gauge reads 45 then zeros out, you either have a faulty gauge/circuit, or a serious problem with your engine. Is your oil full?

Oil was most definetly full (i only say was because i just drained it to change oil while im working on it) i suspect faulty cuircit as all of my guages were not working execpt the fuel guage when i got the truck. The fuel guage bounces real bad voltmeter now works and oil presure now sorta works as i mentiond before. Also as im looking around i can see the bell shape sending unit to the guage with the single wire but cant seem to find the two wire unit any where any suggestions on where its located?

I also just relized i dont even have a fuse in the fuse box where its labeld as choke which is extrememly confusing unless they also run through another fused circuit

[/IMG] dont k ow if you can see it or not very clearly but that is the sending unit along with a single wire that plugs into it. The other wires run into the hei distributor and one other wire running through there that runs into the main harness but doesnt connect any where over there (edit: hmm photobucket picture does not seem to want to share haha)

So a little bit of an update. Finally got my manual oil pressure guage hooked on and seems that ether my cluster cuircit bord or guage it self is faulty as suspected the manual guage is reading just over 30 psi on idle and just about 60 psi at 1300 rpms so low oil pressure seems to not be the culprit of the flashing choke light. Am i correct in thinking that this means its just simply grounding out somewhere in the curicit? If so am i also correct in thinking that this should pose no problem other then the annoyence of the light since i run with a manual choke and not electric?

If you have two gauges that reflect the same readings, I'd say that it's just a problem within that circuit. With key on/engine off, does the light stay on constant as it should? Disconnect the plug at the switch. if light goes off, problem solved. If light doesn't go off, jumper the two wires for that switch and it should then go off, problem solved. Ideally you'd pull it all out, but being partial to electric chokes myself, might be better to not-permanently disable it.

Guage in dash reads lower them the manual guage but i suspect the one in the dash is faulty any ways and i know the manual guage is correct as i had a buddy hook his up to double check mine. So low oil pressure is for sure not the issue, im still having trouble finding the switch but will keep looking for it, just glad i dont have to replace the oil pump haha :haha:

Oh and oddly i didnt know the light was supposed to come on with the key on and engine off as mine does NOT do this.
