Chrome plated headers?

Do they make them for our rigs? Has anyone chrome plated their headers?

Only reason I ask is I'm looking for smog legal headers with a good coating. I can either buy the edelbrocks for 350 or take my dynomax headers, weld A.I.R., to them, then have them coated or plated.

Let me start by saying if your rig has AIR and the headers you have do not then the smog nazis will say no way even if you weld AIR fittings into them since the headers won't have a Carb EO# on them.

Chrome will turn blue from the heat and eventually rust. Chrome headers are a thing of the 70's & 80's.

Your best bet is to get the correct smog header either with an HPC coating or have them HPC'd.

Hmmm.... I was wondering about that.

What do you think about the edelbrocks?

Are there better headers out there with air?

Mine had Air pump but they don't look under the hood here. As long as you can pass a smog test your good to go. I haven't finished installing mine yet. I was told that some of these Blazers came without smog pumps. So I had Brian at TBI chips program my truck to run without the pump, and removed all signs of the air pump. I'll be taking it to a smog station after I get the pipes welded on and see if it still passes. Wish me luck :D

What nvrenuf said. I had a set of Doug Thorleys Tri-y's on my 87 that were chrome. Once the heat hit them they went from silver to gold to purple to blue and then the grand finally.... rust.

Remember, this is California we're talking about and they look at EVERYTHING.

Yes, not all rigs have an AIR pump system, my 89 blazer for instance does not use the AIR system. What i've kind of discovered was that if it is a California rig and TBI there isn't an AIR system (at least from what i've been seeing).

Could I get away without AIR then?

It's part of the pulley setup but I'm sure I could just buy a different belt and lose the AIR pump.

If the rig came with AIR it must retain it. The smog technician will know if it came with it or not when he looks up the year and model and California or Federal emissions so no sense in trying to get rid of it.
