if i decide to go camo'the bumpers will need to go black.paint will peel off chrome,right?maybe scuff it up with a grinder then hit it with self etching primer before the black paint. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gifany ideas?

im not sure if it will peel off easily, but im thinking about trying POR-15's Metal Ready . Perfered Parts north of Ionia sells it. same price as online also.

A chrome plating company can strip it for you quickly and cheaply.

Or you could park it in new england for a year--mother nature stripped my chrome off real fast--trouble is,she ate the bumper too!. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif
Seriously,sandblasting is probably the best way to do it yourself,short of sending it out--you will need several coats of primer-surfacer to smooth the rough surface out again.Have you considered powder coating or rhino liner--I know its a little spendy but its very tough. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just sprayed mine on my tow rig.....looks fine in my opinion, and touchups are easy.
Battery acid does wonders to Chrome
Usually use 40 grit 6" disc on a high-torque buffer/polisher/sander. It'll knock the chrome down quick.
Another option is to get a set of the basic trimline bumpers. The el-cheapo trucks had steel bumpers... I got a set off a CUCV, which were of course 383 OD green, even.
Might be easier, if not cheaper, than futzing with your chrome ones... and you might sell your existing ones, get a little $$ back.

I like tube bumpers. Fairly easy too make yourself, or local welding can make them for you. Nothing says get the -_-_ out of my way like a old sewer pipe bumper, LOL. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif

I just sprayed a decent primer over the chrome,and the camo has held up pretty good so far!

i used to work for the largest electroplating company, use a flap wheel on the bumper untill the shine is off. That will tack of the chrome but leave the nickel on. I stand behind Red metal primer only grey sucks!!! it dose not cover!!!
I think dremu may be onto something for ya. Perhaps find someone with a base-options truck that has painted bumpers and offer to trade them. You purty chrome ones for their painted ones. Everybody wins. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
