Chrome work

Is it possible to paint over chrome bumbers and rims? My project K5 needs chrome work on the bumbers and my daliy driver has pitted rims from the damn winter salt frenzy. Any advice?

Yeah and if you use a candy it looks sick! The candy paint is supposed to be backed w/ another color but if you just spray it over chrome and use that as your backing it looks great.

Ok but really you can do it it just takes some prep work. Clean everything thoroughly. Then take coarse sand paper work it all over the surface and gradually step it up to finer and finer grit. Then use a quality primer, then color, YAY!

i understand, i'm starting a four wheel drive fab shop and i'm building a 32 ford hiboy for a customer that's full of chrome...ugh.

Easiest way to deal with chrome is to take it to a plater and have them strip it. Typical bumper chrome is first a layer of copper (which they use like bondo - to smooth out the part), then nickel (for the color), and finally the chrome (to keep the nickel from corroding).
When I built a BMX bike form my nephew I had only the chrome stripped. That left the scouffed up nickel for the powdercoat to stick to.
