chroming???

I have 4 15 inch aluminum wheels and I tried polishing them but that takes way way to long so I was thinking abount getting them chromed does anybody know how much it would cost to do all 4?? Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

I dono about chroming them but I wouldent do it... call and ask around I know of 2 guy in my town that polish wheels for $75-$100 and they really do look BRAND new when there done and I would rather have polished then chrome espically on a off-roader

its going to depend on the wheels if there flat faced then cheeper, if there curved, have corneres and are a little more shaply then you have to use an auxerlery anode to plate them. The are all costom made, so i dought the most places will touch them, as far as prices i am not sure, i work in an electroplating plant and our cost per part is about 150 bucks, i priced out a bumper for a gto, at a local shop and it was 750$!!!!!! and its way cheeper and easyer to do bumpers trust me, so my 2 cents is to polish them, use sand paper flap wheels and cotton/felt wheels with a polishing compound , it comes in a green brick and will polish it up real good. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I have heard of people doing it, one guy here locally got tired of polishing his welds all the time and just had them chromed. I have found that once you get them polished out just wash them on a regular basis and they will not oxidize very fast at all, my welds still look brand new and I have had them since August. Also depends on the brand and quality of the rim...cheap cast alum wheels seem to oxidize fast. Good quality like welds are pretty slow.

Aluminum does oxidize. It doesn't rust though. Aluminum oxidation looks like a white stain.

Is that in a vacuum? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Aluminum does oxidize, even worse in areas with salted roads. That greyish powder that forms on aluminum is oxidation.

Applying chrome over aluminum is not gonna be cheap. But you can polish your current wheels until they shine like new money and then have them clear coated. That will keep them looking good for a long time. Check to see if these guys have a mobile shop in your area: http://www.mobilewheelrepair.com/ They can make your wheels look awesome with a power polisher and then spray on the clear coat to protect the finish! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
