chrysler 42RE auto overdrive trannies, common problem tranny?

Re: chrysler auto overdrive(AW4) trannies, common problem tranny?

all chrysler autos are problematic.

I've been hammering on Chrysler products for over 30 years-only had one go south on me due to a bad pan gasket. I know from past posts certain people are prejudiced against autos, but one properly built and maintained will last as long as a manual, in my 30 years of experience.

not all chrysler autos, mainly the ones ive seen go out are the 46re/rh when you put anything heaver than a 50 sand bag in the back of the truck.

every auto will go out eventually, the driver dictates how long it lasts.

Yes....

I really meant all modern Chrysler autos.

The old tourquflight 727's were probably the best automatic made, rivaled only by the TH400--but the FWD automatics in the dodge caravans and "K" cars were a POS--especially the 1990-91 ones--I can buy several nearly mint caravans and plymouth voyagers for 500 or less at one salvage yard I visit often, only thing is they all need a new tranny, and there is none to be found, seems all of them are in the boneyard due to tranny problems.A new or rebuilt one at a dealer is about 2 grand,so everyone junks them instead..
I think the automatics were a lot better in the "good old days" when they had no computer controls, lock up tourque converters,or overdrive.Maybe not as fuel efficient, but at least they'ed go 100,000 or more miles before croaking--many of the caravans I've seen only had 60-80,000 miles--granted they probably were never serviced, but I still consider that a low mileage to have total failure.I've seen several newer full size dodge trucks with junk tranny's too,at very low mileage--one guy is a contractor, treats his truck like a puff--only got 20,000 miles from brand new before the tranny died--he's on his third one under warranty right now--and the truck is for sale!. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have personal experience with lot's of newer Chrysler automatic trans, and the 42RE was by FAR the most problematic one of the bunch......that's also probably why it has since been completely dropped from the line-up (replaced by either the 42RLE or 545RFE).
