I betcha it was treated as an option so it shows up somewhere else in the factory books. I don't know the first gen's too well.

IIRC, it was switched from the key, so as long as you're not running high-power stuff (big searchlight or, god forbid, an actual cig lighter) you can run it off an appropriate connection @ the fuse panel.

I'm pretty sure the cig lighter in all my GM cars and trucks (up to the 80's) would work all the time, even with the key off...the factory wire was either brown or red,and I am pretty sure it was just plugged into the extra "bat" or "options" tab on the fuse panel...on some of my 60's and 70's cars the lighter was fused with the radio fuse,if you blew the fuse, you lost the radio too..

If your adding one,I'd say its not really important where you get the power from for it--from a fused source at the fuse panel,or the "bat" tap and use an external fuse holder--I dont think the way GM hooked it up was that safe, being "hot" constantly, and I'm surprised it didn't lead to fires, or dead batteries when kids played with the lighter when the car wasn't running..

(I remember being told NOT to touch the lighter when I was little, natuarly,I HAD to fool around with it then, being forbidden!..I ended up scorching my thumb so badly with it I had no fingerprints for about a month!..that taught me it was no toy!...I also got my butt blistered by my dad when he saw what happened..:doah:..later in life I learned you CAN get burned or shocked if you stuck your finger in the lighter socket, despite it being "only" 12V!..

thanks guys, yeah it looks like it was an option that was just plugged into a slot on the fuse panel. Once I had a few minutes to look it up, I found this pic that shows where it should plug in.
