So im still deciding what to do with all these vehicles....Im going to build my 64 CJ-5 into a trailer jeep, custom frame etc. I have a 74' CJ-5 with a 350 SM465 D20 and an 86' K5 tbi350, 700r4, np208, 14 bolt rear, d44 front. Trying to decide to use the parts off the K5 to build the 64' cj5 and use the 74' as a DD or build thrale K5 as a DD. I was thinking the 74' cj5 would be better on fuel (not that it could get worst than my crew cab) but maybe not. What would you daily drive, very rural roads, only 15 miles each way or so. While I am building a DD, its not my only transportation. Was gonna sell the K5, but no luck so far....

I would build the k5. It will probably ride better, most likely have less interior noise and seal you up from poor weather better. And as far as fuel mileage goes, I would bet they are about the same. If anything I would bet on the k5 getting better because of tbi and overdrive. Plus this is a chevy site, don't see many here choosing a jeep over a k5:D.

Many years ago.....drove my brother's 91 Jeep 2 door on some Montana roads (mainly paved). All I remember was more bouncing and up and down ride. More rigid.

Hopped back into the K5 (33's stock suspension)....it was like driving a luxury liner compared to the jeep. That short wheelbase on the jeep really bouces you around.

Both are leaf spring suspensions so keep that in mind (vs. jeep's coils in 97+)

My jeep at 104 wb rides better than my blazer ever did. Also better than mikes. He also said it rides better than his tundra.

Spring overcwith softish springs and good shocks make all the difference.

Road noise is same from blazer to jeep, at least with no carpet. Heaters work awesome. Take top of in summer on either.

You know what my choice was, and it was for this exact reason. Trail rig that rides good on street and gets me there and back

It does....
My 6" lifted (ifs) Tundra, on 35's, rides at about a 6/10.
I'd give Chris's Jeep 7 /10, or 8/10.... Seriously.
It rides better Than I thought ANYTHING could, on 37's and 3/4-Ton gear. :waytogo:

Also consider that (9) on my scale is riding on a cloud.
And, that (10) is the ultimate in good riding suspensions.

This is so true, :pimp::thumb:

I'll be making Chris help me SAS my Tundra.
He knows what he's doing. :D

Good to know all the info.....Glad to hear the jeep rides so well....I do not plan on stretch the wheelbase on the 74 jeep, so hopefully softer springs and good shocks will still ride ok without the stretch...I plan to stretch the 64' to 105" with the running gear from my K5....Chris and Mike, one of these days we have to meet up at prairie city or somewhere so I can check out the jeep, and wheel of course!

Sounds good!! Did you fix the locker, or it just start working for ya?

I "fixed" it.

One side of it the side gear is completely welded to the inner gear. So only one side ratchets. It pops a little louder than a plain lunchbox and doesnt turn quite as good. But its manageable. Plus if I pop it out of fwd you cant even tell its there

Nice fix, I guess I gotta go read through your thread on the Jeep to get myself up to date with your build, its been awhile since I have had time to be on here.

Im looking forward to building my "off-road" jeep, especially since all the parts on my Blazer will live happily under the cj-5. No longer feel the need to get a D60 like I wanted to on the K5!
