The K5 suputtered on me early last week one morning, then cleaned up. Thought it was odd, but it drove out fine, so I figured I'd just keep an eye on it. This weekend, it got TERRIBLE. Spitting, sputtering, barely wanting to stay running. Couldn't even keep it in OD. Checked the codes and had 44. I searched around and most people on here that had the same symptoms and code said it was a fuel pump. In my past as a mechanic, I pretty much found that fuel pumps either worked or they didn't, so I thought that was odd, but everyone seemed to be having the same result. Let the mechanic know, since I had no time to fix it myself. They thought no way it was a fuel pump so they checked the pressure. It was 9 PSI at the filter, which was in spec but barely. They pulled the wires from the MAP sensor to put it in limp mode and it cleaned up, so they determined that it was likely the EGR sensor (based on their previous experience). They said the EGR was in really bad shape when they pulled it, and it ran nice with the new one. Went for a test drive...and it died on them.

Mechanic, remembering how sure I was that the fuel pump was the issue, wacked the bottom of the tank with a hammer after they towed it into the shop. Fired right up.

At least they are giving me an awesome deal on the EGR :D

Nice to see someone getting the better of the shop for a change:woot:

ahahahahahaha

O that's good. I needed that. CK5 = 1 ahahaha

glad to hear it's taken care of, at least it's not a hunt

seen lots of pumps run and build pressure.

but did thay built the right pressure or volume needed was the question.

Nah, this is a good shop. I've always been a "fix it myself" guy, used to be a mechanic. I am running ~80 hours a week now finishing up school and working full time, so I just had to give it up. They've been really good and honest, fair prices and no BS. They just ran into something new I guess. Can't blame them, if it hadn't been for CK5, I'd never have figured it out either.

Just like my BIL and his 99 van, it was acting up and then died and wouldn't start, I asked guys here and they said fuel pump.
I told him and he said no, I changed it last year.
So his buddy started changing injectors, filters, he changed the fuel regulator, put some dual tip or something Bosch spark plugs got it to run but still was running poor.
I told him to put back the stock style spark plugs, and it still ran like crap, then he gets a fuel pressure guage and sure enough, it was putting out enough. The pressure was there but not the volume.
So now he's changing the fuel pump.

Well, picked it up tonight. Runs great! I'm thinking that I might have to pull the battery cable to reset the computer, top end feels a little soft. Idle is much smoother then it's ever been, and it starts much faster.

went through this with both my Sierra and my Brides ZJ the past two years...:doah:

now she has a completely rebuilt fuel system...

Well after changing the fuel pump on my BIL vortec 5.7 it still had a miss so we changed the dist cap... Oh my GOD, I can't understand how it was running. The tips were almost gone and the center electrode was about 1/4" deep hole.:dunno:
Now it runs like a champ:
New fuel pump
new fuel regulator
new cap and rotor
New injectors
new fuel filters
New spark plugs and wires.
:doah:$$$

A buddy of mine used to have an old beat up Nissan Pickup.Every once in a while the fuel pump quit running. I would go over and hit it with a hammer and he drove it again. It went like that for 3 years and he sold the truck. He gave the guy the hammer he kept behind the seat.
