Who can get in , start it up , and drive to go wheeling , wheel , if you do break you can fix it on the trail , then drive home so you can drive to work the next day :thumb:

Extra points if you can tow a camper too :D

There's only one time my k5 didn't make it home under it's own power. 200 miles to the place, wheeled all day, then my 266K mile 1982 motor spun a bearing and snapped a rod. AAA got be back to civilization.

Went to Jack-in-the-Box another time (as we always do after wheeling) and afterward, I found out that mud had cemented my starter motor stuck. Swapped it in the parking lot next to a spilled shake. It was 100+ degrees outside and the thing didn't melt so much as deflate. WTF?

Most recently, I blew both rear u-joints apart getting a little heavy-footed while climbing a ledge. Only had one spare. A trip to Autozone, some wrench time and I was back in action.

So, only one "SOL" situation.

In all cases, having tools and a good friend (ride) made a small inconvenience out of what would have been a huge pain. I've paid him back by helping him replace his starter in a mud puddle. Of course, I let him lay in the mud under his jeep while I wired it up from the top :D. I'm so sweet. And one time I towed him home because the jeep wouldn't start. We never figured out why. an hour later, it was fine, then it wouldn't start again a week later. ok.

You drove 125 miles on a dirt trail going from one highway to another?!?! STUD!

Mine used to be reliable... and live-able. Used to DD it to work and to camp every day, that is until... well.. you know. I just sorta hate to mention it, 'cause it's still sitting there, being unreliable. :o

I built mine to be totally reliable. I would not hesitate to drive it to Baja and do the 1000. May not place very well but I know I would make it. Then drive it home.
Furthest I have driven it almost totally off pavement was +- 400 miles across northern Nevada border to border completely on the dirt From Montello on the Utah border to Via on the Calif border. Then hit the pavement and drove 300+ miles back home. Not unusual for me to go hunting for a week and put well over 200 miles off road, another 200 on pavement , get back home and drive it to work.
Yesterday I went duck hunting. It involved a 30 mile drive up the Humboldt river in 4x4 with several water crossings, mild rocks, sand, mud ect. got home and realized I forgot to bring a spare tire along. :eek1: Dumb! But still got home OK. :D. Not too many people road hunt for ducks but I have it down to an art form. Duck is on the menu for tonight. prolly drive the k5 to work tomorrow.

Not saying I have never broke my k5. I have blown a hub, u joints, and some other breakdowns on the trail but had the parts in my trail box to get me home. The only time my k5 left me sitting in the last 8 years was when the starter went out. But it was in my driveway and I had to walk down to the parts store to get a new one. I do work on my truck quite a bit, most of it PM. seems like there is always something to do:doah:
