There's only one time my k5 didn't make it home under it's own power. 200 miles to the place, wheeled all day, then my 266K mile 1982 motor spun a bearing and snapped a rod. AAA got be back to civilization.
Went to Jack-in-the-Box another time (as we always do after wheeling) and afterward, I found out that mud had cemented my starter motor stuck. Swapped it in the parking lot next to a spilled shake. It was 100+ degrees outside and the thing didn't melt so much as deflate. WTF?
Most recently, I blew both rear u-joints apart getting a little heavy-footed while climbing a ledge. Only had one spare. A trip to Autozone, some wrench time and I was back in action.
So, only one "SOL" situation.
In all cases, having tools and a good friend (ride) made a small inconvenience out of what would have been a huge pain. I've paid him back by helping him replace his starter in a mud puddle. Of course, I let him lay in the mud under his jeep while I wired it up from the top

. I'm so sweet. And one time I towed him home because the jeep wouldn't start. We never figured out why. an hour later, it was fine, then it wouldn't start again a week later. ok.
