ok, so i've been searching the old threads looking at questions/info regarding the install of a detroit.

i've got a 14bff and 4.10 gears. it appears that from what everyone has said in these threads that it's a simple drop in procedure and that there is only one detroit for this application so confusing parts/partnumbers isn't an issue. my brother is convinced that it's not - and that i'll have to reset the backlash on my gears. i read billavista's comment in the 14bolt bible, which i believe contradicts my brother's statement.

on average, how long does the install take? i'm hoping to order one this week.

any thoughts? clarifications?

Yup. Count the turns when you take it out, and mark the holes for the ... umm... spider-holder-things :haha: [highly technical term!]

14bff's are special as they don't use shims on the carrier, insetad they have the adjusters. That and the Detroit doesn't replace the carrier, but fits inside. It shouldn't take but a coupla hours, tops.

Make sure you have some help. Busting the ring gear bolts loose is a pain in the neck.

Yeah, I'm getting my 10bolt ARB install confused with the 14BFF Detroit ... but I seem to recall that the ring gear bolts are threaded the wrong way and really wanted an impact to get off ... and then some crazy torque like 150ft/lbs?

If you don't have the dial indicator to recheck the BL then let someone else do it.
In my opinion....counting the adjuster turns is not enough.

I would definetly reccomend double checking.

As for ring gear bolts, break them loose with the carrier still in the axle. AFAIK the are regulare thread...

pick up a cheapo dial indicator and magnetic base at HF if need be. They can be had for under 20$ for the pair and after spending 400$ for a locker, whats another 20$ to make sure the backlash is correct??

Im not saying that a dial indicator isnt the way to go But, I dropped my Detroit in 4 years ago without 1 and it works perfectly.
