After shaving my axle I'm sure I got some metal shavings inside the axle even though I was careful. What could I use to flush it out? Would diesel work?

I just got done doing the same thing. I used compressed air, then brake clean.
Making sure to get all the nooks and crannies. Like the fluid return under the pinion bearings

For the tubes I have a piece of all thread with 2 nuts clamped around a small piece of metal. I wrap a rag around it and drag it up and down the tubes. Then brake clean.

Then I hand wiped it down with a cloth to make sure it was clean.

x2 almost word for word.

and if out of truck set on jack stands 1 high / 1 low to help in tube drain out.

U can use a 3 bladed cylinder hone with an extension on a drill. Spray some brake cleaner in the tube, run the hone thru the tube. Flush with cleaner put a rag on the hone and run thru the tube or push rags thru with a broom stick. Flush till its clean. Then blow it out with air.

I just use my parts washer big enough for an axle :D
