cleaning R&P/Carrier ?\'s

I just drained the fluid out of some axles sitting in my garage waiting to go into my blazer and I would like to clean the R&P and inside of the carrier better to make sure I got all dirt particles etc out (I mean I want it CLEAN). Is there anything in particular I should use or stay away from using? Thanks in advance!

I've always used some brake cleaner to clean out the inside of my diff. It works really well.

Go with Bowtie' suggestion- BrakeKleen is the only stuff I use. It really penetrates and breaks up all the crud that has built up farther back in the diff. I'll go through a whole bottle per diff............

One hint: Make sure you get a rag inside the bottom of the housing and sweep all the leftover cleaner out, or it will dilute your new gear oil and cause it to break down a lot faster. Once everything's cleaned out, I also let the diff sit for about half an hour before replacing the cover to ensure that any residual BrakeKleen has had a chance to evaporate...........

I always use an old squirt bottle filled with varsol. It does a good job of cleaning everything out as well. Then use the brake cleaner to dry it out.

Yep, I use only brake cleaner on all axle work. This is very simple to use and VERY effective in getting the grudg out FAST!!! Best thing about b.c. is that is dries FAST allowing you to get to work right away. The b.c. also does NOT do any damage to seals, rubber, etc.
Unless you are doing a total rebuild, and have the axle out of the truck, take it to the pressure wash and use HOT SOAPY water to clean it. Never use plain cold water. Surface rust will settle on the machined areas. Hot soapy wash will clean and get the axle warm enough that when you get done, the water will dry right away and wont leave any surface rust on the machined areas.

also to prevent rust mist with oil [ie wd-40] after cleaning at powerwash. then use brakleen before install

let me bring this back from the dead-
i've been cleaning all my bolts with gasoline and alcohol for years due to the chemical properties of the two. would it be ok to do the same with the spider gears? i want them suckers clean! and the bearings too?

i would stay with brake cleaner not gas.

compressed air would be good idea after spraying with brake clean

too late- oh well, gas can't hurt too bad. i'll do brake cleaner also later- right before i re-install them.

If I'm not feeling poor I use regular parts cleaner. It cleans better than gas and doesn't give you a headache if you breathe it for an hour.

Otherwise, I use gas. $2 for a gallon of gas is cheaper than $2 for a can of brake cleaner.

Oh, and I use carburetor cleaner if I need something that won't evaporate quite as quick but will do as good of a job.


I always rinse with brake cleaner though since it gets rid of residue.


Don't leave brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner, or gas on seals for long though. It'll ruin them quickly. Brake cleaner and carburetor cleaner will dry out rubber in short order.

i finish with alcohol a lot because it tends to get the little dirt. i'll also use lighter fluid, and LIGHT it on bolts, it does the best job, by far.

good gawd, whatever you do, DON'T use gas. 1 cup of gasoline vaporized in air to the appropriate degree has about the same explosive power of 15 sticks of dynamite. This is why the fuel-air bombs that the air force has are so devestating. cant stress it enough, dont clean with gas... even in a semi-enclosed area (ie open garage etc).

ha- dude, don't worry, i know what i'm doing- i know what atomized particle explosions are (what you're referring to) and i know how to prevent them- keep the parts in a COLD area in a CLOSED container, THEN since oil is lighter than gas, pour a thin layer of oil on top of the gasoline to keep it from evaporating.

ok- now there appears to be a small amount of corrosion on my side gears- would a wire brush (on drill press) be ok to get it off?

Why go through all that when you could just use brake cleaner /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
